Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" "L" and the Olvie Branch! For Sure! Type 2

Well I found my found my first Standing Liberty quarter dollar today. It's worn, but I dont care! The Silver U-Max seem to be doing pretty well. I paid a visit where the settelers used to live I believe! Anyway, I could not believe it! Can any one help with the date, I think its the first series from 1900? Because of the breast? :whip2: Anyway Neet find! Peace! the Kid in Idaho! Marvin. After further review of this coin, I say it is a 1916 because of the split hair on the front, and on the back it is clear the allignment of the eagle, and the way it is positioned the 3 stars would not have been their. Even as worn as it is....if you look closely the the space between the eagle and where it reads "quarter dollar," their no room for stars! Awesome.

The Olvie Branch on the 1916 overlaps the "L" on this coin. The Type 2 1917 does not! Any Questions? Im taking this one in. After using a powerful optics this is 99% a 1916.

Re: BEEP! BEEP! Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" Quarter Dollar Today! See Photo!

I'm seeing no stars beneath the eagle on the reverse. It looks like you may have a 1917 Variety 1 SLQ. Congrats!!

Re: BEEP! BEEP! Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" Quarter Dollar Today! See Photo!

Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars were minted from 1916 to 1930. The first two years, 1916 & 1917, SLQ's were made without stars under the flying eagle reverse, and are called Variety 1.

Variety 2 SLQs were minted from 1917-1930, and include 3 stars under the eagle reverse.

Variety 1 SLQs include the extremely-rare 1916. Even with no visible date, there are some characteristics which allow skilled identifiers to tell the 1916 from the 1917.

The mintmark on all SLQs is located on the obverse, to the left of Lady Liberty's forward foot, or on the left side of the coin above the date, about the same level as Liberty's ankle.

Unlike others here, I suspect your coin may be a 1916, based on the split ponytail. But I could be wrong.

Even damaged as your coin is, if it is a 1916, it would be worth big $$$. Do not attempt to clean the coin further. Please. But do include 2 more photos of the obverse of your coin, with special attention to Liberty's head. If Liberty's ponytail has only 1 lock of hair, it is likely a 1917 Variety 1. If, however, Liberty's ponytail has a split hair lock, with 2 separate but closely related hair locks, it could well be a 1916.

In either case, adding 2 more photos to this thread should make for an interesting discussion.

Nice Job my friend. Here's a recent 1917 Type 2 I found. You cans see the stars below the Eagle compared to your Type 1 with no stars. Aside from those with special mintmarks, the 1917 Type 1 and Type 2 are very comparable in value.

Congrats on your first SLQ! Looks like you are on a good site. I still remember finding my first 20 years ago beside a sidewalk!

Try using a nice clean sheet of paper and taking a pencil and lightly rub the area where the date is. It might work ??? I had a LC that I did this with and was able (with a magnifying glass) to read the date.

That is a beauty, Sentinel! You're certain it was found in the ground?!?!? Looks slightly worn on breast and face, but probably XF-40-high AU. WOW!

cool find! Still waiting to find one of these

Re: BEEP! BEEP! Found My First "STANDING LIBERTY" More Photos! It's a 1916!

Based on the photos you just provided, I'd have to agree with the 1917 designation. But the last photo does not appear possible, based on wear, to be the reverse of the 1st 2 photos. The obverse appears to my eye to be about AG2 condition. But the reverse shows only moderate wear, and probably would grade VF30 or so. Also, the lighting on the 3rd photo (reverse) looks more professional than the first 2.

Did you take all these photos?

I could still be wrong here. What I need are photos showing head details, not the base or date area. For a 1916, there should be a strand of hair in the ponytail pointed toward the upper lobe of the B in LIBERTY. I see no indication of such a strand in the latest photos, but the first photos appear to show it.
