Found my first Half Dollar today . . . it wasn't even Canadian!

Did some on-line research last night of an area across the street from where I hunted on Wednesday. The area in blue is where I hunted today, in red is where I hunted on Wednesday and found the junk bling ring (I had it looked at today by a jeweller :'( ). The Google photo was taken a couple of years ago, the house has since been demolished.

I started by finding a couple of 1950 Canadian pennies in the same hole. I then noticed a City Parks Department vehicle pull up across the road from where I was hunting and the four guys inside were all staring at me! I thought . . . oh no here we go! It was just as they were pulling up that I got a great high signal at about 4" deep, so I just stuck my shovel on the spot and stared right back at them. They eventually drove away after about 2 minutes, which seemed like 10, so I proceeded to dig my target. Man am I ever glad that I marked the spot, because what popped up was a 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar! :o The second photo where my detector is, shows exactly where I found the Liberty Half.

Can anyone tell me what the stamped marks mean in the last photo . . . lower right hand corner below the eagles tail? :icon_scratch:

I am kinda disappointed that it's not a Canadian Half, but I think the Walking Liberty is one of the most beautiful American coins ever made!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Keep hunting Papa, I'm sure you'll find one eventually, I just got lucky! :D I live at least 3 hours from the Upstate NY border, (I'm situated in the middle of Lake Ontario across from Rochester, NY) so I've no idea how it got here either! :laughing7:

I vacationed for a number of years in the Cobourg/Roseneath area. I think I may have lost that coin

N2CU

I know the area well N2CU! :D I take the family to Cobourg Beach a couple of times each year. I've also taken my daughter to the Roseneath Fair so she could ride the old carousel. :icon_thumright:

Send me your address and I'll put the Walker in the mail for you right away! :laughing7:

Dave

Dave, I'll pick it up next time I go to Rice Lake. ;D

Sounds like a plan! :D
Last week when you mentioned Roseneath it got me to thinking that I show check out the old fairgrounds to see if it would be worth hunting. :icon_scratch: So I drove up there on Tuesday and saw that the old carousel had already been boarded up for the winter. The grass in the park has been so well maintained and groomed by the local Kiwanis Club, that I didn't dare dig any holes! :laughing7:

Hope you got to do some fishing on Rice Lake when you were there? It's a long beautiful lake!

Last time I was up there was three years ago. We had been going to Muskie Bay Resort every year for something like 15 years but as the kids got older it was harder to get everyone together for a family vacation. Once I figured it out, the Walleye, Bass and Crappie fishing was some of the best I've had in Ontario.
