Found my first Half Dollar today . . . it wasn't even Canadian!

Did some on-line research last night of an area across the street from where I hunted on Wednesday. The area in blue is where I hunted today, in red is where I hunted on Wednesday and found the junk bling ring (I had it looked at today by a jeweller :'( ). The Google photo was taken a couple of years ago, the house has since been demolished.

I started by finding a couple of 1950 Canadian pennies in the same hole. I then noticed a City Parks Department vehicle pull up across the road from where I was hunting and the four guys inside were all staring at me! I thought . . . oh no here we go! It was just as they were pulling up that I got a great high signal at about 4" deep, so I just stuck my shovel on the spot and stared right back at them. They eventually drove away after about 2 minutes, which seemed like 10, so I proceeded to dig my target. Man am I ever glad that I marked the spot, because what popped up was a 1917 Walking Liberty Half Dollar! :o The second photo where my detector is, shows exactly where I found the Liberty Half.

Can anyone tell me what the stamped marks mean in the last photo . . . lower right hand corner below the eagles tail? :icon_scratch:

I am kinda disappointed that it's not a Canadian Half, but I think the Walking Liberty is one of the most beautiful American coins ever made!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

Now your humming Dave, congrats on a Silver Half, and you deserve it. A lot of people may NEVER find a half dollar you know.

I didn't want to say anything about the last ring find. You know you're gonna find a lot of rings in the future, you should get yourself a gold testing kit, save yourself a lot of fizzeling waiting for a jewler to check it out.

Again congrats on the half. Still waiting for one, but not holding my breath. (going out tomorrow though)

Good luck out there.

Rick

Keep hunting Papa, I'm sure you'll find one eventually, I just got lucky! :D I live at least 3 hours from the Upstate NY border, (I'm situated in the middle of Lake Ontario across from Rochester, NY) so I've no idea how it got here either! :laughing7:

Thanks very much,
Dave

I had a feeling the ring was too good to be true, I just needed confirmation form the experts here on Tnet! I still can't believe I found it, when I saw the size of it I thought . . . Wow a silver dollar! :o When I saw it was a 1917 Walker, I was gob smacked! :laughing7:

Good luck tomorrow Rick :icon_thumright:

I loved the look of the Walkers so much . . . I had a 1946 I inherited from my grandfather 25 years ago made into a ring that I wear every day. ;D

Thanks for posting Briz,
Dave

Hey Dave,
I know what you mean by the size of the "thing" when you find it. I've panned gold, My biggest pieces are honestly match head sized, when you first find them, they are quite big, but after they go in the bottle they are much smaller. Just like your half, I imagine, pretty big when found, but now not larger than life, just life sized. Still pretty big for found Silver.

Your ring is totally cool...Did you make it yourself?? Because it looks like it was made very well!

No I'm not that talented Briz! :D I found a guy on the internet by the name of David Plante, he lives in Virginia. He emailed me some examples of rings that he's done, including dimes, quarters and dollars. I also had him make me an 1895 Barber Half ring.

He does some of the best work I've ever seen!

Rick, I honestly don't think I'll ever find a Canadian Half or Silver Dollar here in Ontario . . . have you found any in Nova Scotia? ??? Canadians never used them in their currency like the Americans did. I remember receiving them as birthday gifts up until about 1970. We used to put them away or took them to the bank to put in our "savings" account.

No Dave never found one, thought I made that clear. (wishing though) True, more modern ones are more for the savings, but earlier ones were the "workhorse" of the economy. With little to no paper money the 1920's and earlier 50 cent coins, are mostly well worn, and better specimens are worth considderable monies, for just those reasons.

Isn't it amazing how many US coins there are in circulation here in Canada, we just accept them as our own currency. I find old wheats and memorials on almost every hunt. Here's a '49 Washington I found in June at an 1880 school site out in the country.

Happy Hunting to you,
Dave
