Well for the first day of December it felt more like May. I managed a little time this evening to hunt, so I went up to the old farmhouse I hunt often. The finds are getting slim and I like to try different tactics every time I go. It was very slow going and didn't find much. I got around the back of the house that has a heavy amount of iron and got a high tone next to a low tone. The first target to come up was a very rusty nail or hinge pin, and the second was a small eagle button! About 8' from that hole was another high tone mixed with a low tone. I dig a plug and I see a back piece of a spur! But this is not just any piece of spur, but another piece of spur that my 13 year old boy found about 15' from this piece back on one of our first hunts at this site in July. I have been over this area a lot, but the iron always masked the other targets. I didn't find much more but it was a beautiful day to get out for a little. Good luck on your next hunt, David.

P.S. This was our first post on TN with his spur and other goodies http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/todays-finds/304489-old-homesite-finds-first-time-post.html

Congrats on completing your spur find. Nice button, too.

Thanks Michiganne, I was very excited to see that piece turn up. I also found another spur about 40' from this one and it is missing a small piece. I am hoping to find it too.

That' really a great find in amongst the junk. Were you using the whites or the minelab?

Thanks BosnMate, I was using my Etrac in Two Tone Ferrous mode. This allows you to run the detector "wide open" and gives you two tones, a low tone for iron and a high tone for more conductive metals. This method is very slow but very effective. I would not have been able to find these with any discrimination set, because the iron was masking the keepers.

Hi Dave,

Congrats on finding the missing piece of that spur. That is a great looking spur! It's always rewarding to find the missing piece(s) of something.

Congratulations!!! - It can be difficult looking for
one half of an item - I am still looking for one half
of a Federal plate from 10 years ago. Very nice
recovery!!!

KILLER CONGRATS on findin the other half bud!!! Goes to show knowin ur machine is wat it takes to find ALL thats hiding out there.. Wonder if there's a way to put it together without hurtin it? Keep at it.. HH

Thanks Mike, I hope you can recover the other half of that plate. What area of Mid Tenn are you in?

Thanks fishstick, I'm sure it could be restored as good as new, but I like the story behind it. My son found the first piece, this was his first big find. We have been imagining how it got mangled. There is still two pieces missing, the rowel and one of the arms that holds the rowel. Maybe we will find those next.

It's so hard to find the matching pieces of finds. I hunted for months for the snake piece and opposite side to the CW era snake buckle I dug years ago in Kentucky. No luck. Congrats on that recovery. It's a beautiful decorated "officer-style spur," with a great story to go with it.

Cheers,

Buck

I never ever, ever find the other half to anything. That is fantastic. Good job. I wonder now where the other one was :)

Congratulations.

Thanks Buck & Tnmountains, It was very unexpected and a big surprise to see it laying there in the dirt. I thought it was far, far away from the first piece. It's just another lesson of how things can turn up in this hobby. It would be an even bigger surprise to find the match.

That is awesome! Congrats!
