Tough to say without any more info written on the piece. Being number 1 makes it more perplexing, but perhaps just a lucky coincidence! I was initially thinking dog tag, but if so it would probably mention it somewhere on the piece. I also thought chauffeur badge, but it doesn't make sense why there'd be two holes on the sides.

Hope someone can help you more!

Thanks for your response...we have seen Union dog tags & they are typically a lot smaller, maybe better than an inch or so wide...and being #1 also threw us for a loop...perhaps a tag for a larger animal, say a horse or donkey?

Around the turn of the 20th C, motor vehicle tags looked something like your relic. Here is a 1905 Michigan tag:

You can see the top hole has been widened to make a watch fob.

Many towns and cities also has such tags for carriages and bicycles.

I've been to greenville quite a few times. A lot of public places I've detected. Be careful though if you want to detect
Parks. They have some odd and confusing rules. They're contradictory. I've been to some private places in greenville too through. Good luck
