We walked down to the creek today and my grandson found this in the water. It is some kind of metal and a curved pick . he found it just like in my picture,(the clippers are for size). The metal wire is a little bit smaller than the fruit jar wire I have found they used long ago. Does anybody have any Ideals what it might be from,he is so excited. Thank you

But the coils on this thing in the photo look like they've been welded or soldered at several points.

I can see there is one soldered point at the base.

Otherwise, this coil could be some sort of heating element - :icon_scratch:

My first thought was part of box springs from a bed.

Thanks everybody for the ideals,I asked my Dad and he does not know either, but we wonder if somebody had wound that around some wood and the wood is long gone, sure would of hurt if you got hit by it. The part of the creek my grandson found it in is where they crossed in the civil war(the low part of the creek) so you never know, lots of wagons too on this old road.
My little 7 year grandson said thanks everybody

Maybe I missed the metal composition. Will a magnet stick to it?

I think knowing the metal composition will rule out a lot of these ideas. Ask your grandson to try a magnet on it. I bet it doesnt stick.

My guess too, Big Cy, from the picture I assumed it to be copper. Shaped like it is, could it have somehow been used
to expand when exposed to heat, like some kind of pressure regulator ? Found near a creek & a creek is needed for
distillation or stills, perhaps some sort of antique safety pop-off valve for putting corn in a bottle. I really don't know.

No,a magnet doesnot stick to the wound metal ,just the needle pick looking object, we checked the wire from the old fruit jar,and a magnet doesnot stick to it either.

You can rule out box spring or seat spring. If the ferrous pick part is not soldered, how is it attached? Will it come apart?

Yes,we took it apart and made another pic.

I dont think its anything very old. Just two pieces of trash stuck together. The ferrous piece could be anything. The nonmagnetic coiled piece looks like cadium or silver wire solder to me.
