Hi all,

So my brother gets to travel allot. He went to Geneva Switzerland and found this metal. We did a little research and all we could find was that it is a silver metal and could be a museum piece. If anyone has any information on this thing and what the value would be please tell me? Also is this something PCGS would authenticate or grade?

Thanks all,

Keep @ it and HH!!

1896 was the first of the "modern" olympic games. They were held in Athens, Greece.

Below is a silver medal from those games.

It`s only silver plated, only worth 7 and a half dollars. It was lost by a person whose name sounded like an object slightly larger than a bread basket.
Sorry, just had to pull SOMETHING out of thin air.

If it were a museum piece, then it looks like it was ruined by those shovel/digger marks on the reverse. You know it's worth at least the melt value, other than that it's worth what someone else is willing to pay.

Note: These are my OPINIONS and should not be taken as fact (either real or imagined). I did in fact form and pull said opinion out of thin air.

Nice i.d. Thor! :icon_thumright: As far as GibH's comment about condition goes, should you ever want to keep this piece it wouldn't be unreasonable to have a jewler burnish these out. Considering their location on the smooth surface, this could probably be done fairly easily. Neat find!

Lol, :D

Wow, Sorry if I got upset for not wanting misleading, false information that someone made up....... ??? I was not looking for opinions like someone said, I needed facts, :icon_scratch: Sorry If I sounded rude but.... :dontknow: I have posted the thing before and got the same results just people guessing. ??? I need money so I needed to know facts.... :help: The marks look like stab marks from someone stabbing it over and over with a large knife. :tongue3: (Not done by a digger or me) This was not dug or stolen like someone pulled from the air :laughing9: my brother gave it to me... :dontknow: Thank you for those that did not cry like babies and gave me some factual information backed by a resource some how.... :angel11: Again sorry :notworthy: if need facts and need to know what the thing is worth, how else can I ask ? :dontknow:

I don't speek french and, I don't base value on something from what someone is willing to pay. If someone is willing to pay .30 for a gold chain dose not mean its worth 30 cents. Stuff like this is not helpful... :dontknow: :dontknow:

Again thank you for those who posted real helpful information. :read2: So far it seems its not a museum piece, Its a souvenir medallion or medal from the 1896 exposition in Switzerland. Still have no Idea on value other than Silver Melt Value. :BangHead: and we all know every pawn shop in America would give you only melt value for the Holy grail.... :laughing7:

Again sorry If I got short or came off as rude... :notworthy: I most likely won't sell unless I can get several thousand dollars and that seems unlikely. :crybaby2: I'm sure the person who sold it to my brother likely new the value and sold it to my brother at the right price.

Keep @ it and HH!! ;D

It looks a little small to be 10 ounces of silver. :-*

Maybe RELICDUDE can help you ID the medal. :D

I think an old US silver dollar is 1 ounce to compare. I didnt know he bought it, I thought he found it. I hope he gets back his investment. I find that American antiques seem to be in the highest demand here generally speaking. It is a nice foreign medallion. :icon_thumright: Its good you apologized. Sometimes we say things in haste we dont really mean.

I might add that a good rule of thumb is to buy silver and gold at around melt down value. That way you cant lose.

Just curious, did your brother purchase this from an antique shop, yard sale or someone on the street?

What you have here is a silver medallion given as a "prize" for winning in a certain category at the 1896 Geneva Exposition. There were only a finite number made, one for each winning category. So, yes it is scarce. Is it a museum piece? Maybe.

Thanks guys, :notworthy:

I wanted to answer Bigcypresshunter question. :headbang: I always try and buy bellow or at spot price. :icon_thumleft: I had to wait till I could call my brother cause he is 3 hours difference from me. ::) He said that he got it at a strange place to have metals and coins. He said he found it at a antique watch store. :o Thank you Thrillatahunt for your information, I still wish I knew a price. :icon_scratch:

There is always an exception, but I try to avoid antique shops. They are generally overpriced. Especially those in tourist areas. Dont forget they have a high overhead.

It was more of a watch store than Antique shop he said But. That is a very good point thank you, I will make a special note of that... Good info ! :headbang: :hello2:

I like yard sales. Whole house auctions or warehouse auctions are not bad either. Especially boxes full of items not searched. Actually most of my best finds have come from evictions or the dump. Only if you are very sharp, can you find deals at antique shops IMO.
