Hi all,

So my brother gets to travel allot. He went to Geneva Switzerland and found this metal. We did a little research and all we could find was that it is a silver metal and could be a museum piece. If anyone has any information on this thing and what the value would be please tell me? Also is this something PCGS would authenticate or grade?

Thanks all,

Keep @ it and HH!!

I would agree with Montana Jim. Here's a little on the Swiss National Exposition, held in Geneva in 1896:

http://www.expo-archive.ch/eng/index.html?siteSect=1300

The phrase on the back would basically translate to "Capital of Guarantee" which would likely be a reference to Geneva's role as a center of finance and banking.

So, probably some sort of commemorative medal from the expo. No idea on value.

looks like a sovenior or award type--- 1896 city of geneva --swiss national exposition medal / silver
the phaze upon the front is in latin * post tenebras lux * (after darkness light)* --it properly means "light after darkness" in english -- to be more exact in its proper format would be --- " post tenebras spero lucem " which means " after darkness, I hope for light"from the vulgata version of JOB 17 :12 (bible)-- this religious phraze --was used as a motto by john calvin * a leader of the protestant reformation --it became the motto of the reformation movement in general and also the "motto" of calvins adopted home city --geneva , switzerland.--- it is carved into the reformation wall in geneva.

I can not make out the tiny lettering on the rear --it might be mint markings or the medal designers "name"-- if you spell them out for me so I could see them-- maybe I could help.

* as with all things "whats it worth"? as much as some else will offer for it / and as little as you will take for it --when those two "ends" meet thats what its worth at any given moment.

This is a souvenir token sometimes referred to as a "So Called Dollar" because of it's size. They were popular around the trun of the 20th c. I didn't find your exact token but a similar token from the same exposition was listed on a German coin page for about $8 USD. It could be worth as much as a couple hundred bucks, but it is definitely not a museum piece.

I believe a better term would be medal/medallion as tokens normally have a spending/trading/use

A lot of times it has to do with the die axis whether it's referred to as a token (up & down) or medal. I'm not sure if that is the case here, but is for many in my parts.

maybe say a 2nd place "award medal" at the expo -- 1st would have been gold --often expo's would give out awards for the best invention --or whatever theme the expo was touting -- it might be one of those and with silver at $17 a oz -- even at melt value its worth more than $8 ---( unless its being sold by a crackhead needing a hit to a pawn broker.)

I looked up the definition of "so called dollar" because I wasnt familiar with it. Its basically a silver dollar-sized medal commemorating a special event. I love TN because its so educational. :icon_thumright:

Here is more I have to read up on it. http://www.socalleddollar.com/longdefinition.html

Random crap from the air? Just because someone happens to know about something that you've never heard of makes their knowledge random crap from the air? My detecting buddy happens to collect so called dollars. That's what you have.

Medaillions like these are so common that eBay has a category for them.

Not too many museums lining up to buy them, either.
