OK...Last whatsit today. It's 50 deg outside and I think I will go MD'ing. This was found in my front yard
and I have found 5 in all. 1 1/8" long and slotted on one end. Maybe a part of a stringed instrument of
some sort? My house was built around 1900 but I think there was a house there before. There is an iron
patch about 30 yards from my doorstep. Square nails, heater parts and horse shoes. I am told my house
never had a heater. It was heated with a fireplace. Any help will be appreciated.

What material are they made from?

First pices look like the insert of a cable clamp. Did you find some brass nuts also?? How about a threaded bolt with a slot cut in it??

I have found some of those too. I would love to find out what they are. Mine are from the site of an old resort hotel from the mid 1800s to early 1900s. I'm thinking part of some early electrical connection?

I wonder if they are "bridges" off of the soundboard of a player piano or spinet?

*Disregard this theory ... I just did some checking on the piece I thought they might be, but I was mistaken.

I think they are brass. There is a redish color like copper but they were found in red clay. I'm pretty sure brass.

I know the type wire clamp you are talking about but no nuts or bolts found of that type. I agree, they look to be made to hold or clamp
something round like wire or cable the same way the cable clamp you spoke of would.

I found several of these where they put new windows in an old school building. I think they had something to do with the flashing around the old windows. Monty

Insert for an split bolt connector? :icon_scratch:

It does kinda look like the inside piece of a large split bolt connector.

I can not say for sure.

Yet electrical is still in mind, these might have been rivited, ( the bottoms bent out to hook) to some thing. The slots were for attaching wires; crimped; to..

Some thing from when I was a kid and took stuff apart for the fun of it... If I could remember what it was... Maybe some heater??

I agree somewhat and am still looking at split bolt type clamps. The problem is, if you look at the ones I found, there is no room for the nut. The
legs are too close to the bar. If you look at the two split bolts posted the nut fits in a slot in the inside piece. It is the same for all the old split bolts
I have looked at too. Thanks for all the replies.

The legs need to be longer for split bolt, I see. It would have to be a narrow large nut. So I guess its not from a split bolt.

But maybe something similar. My guess would be the bottom V is to attach down onto something rounded.

I am almost positive it is part of the armature from a starter for a car, truck ,tractor ect. There is a row of the going around one end of the armature I would guess around 20 in all.
