Got out yesterday to my archaic site and it didnt disappoint.Found this woodworking tool,a quartz scraper and a first for me a bottom chunk of a pottery vessel...You can see the quartz in the clay..mjm 20190723_072001.jpg 20190807_093431.jpg20190807_093508.jpg20190806_164430.jpg

Any ideas as to why they would make them with a pointed bottom?
 

Nice finds! Is the wood working tool a gouge? You all are blessed to have those in some numbers up there.

You see narrow bottomed vessels in a lot of places because they could easily place it in a fire. (Push the base into the coals, wedge it between logs, etc.) Or they could put it in sand/soil without it toppling over. You'll see some thickness and fire marks if it was made for heat.
 

I'm going with gouge..its got a short channel ..
 

Of all the pottery I've come across it is the first bottom section...very thick..
