A friend of mine found this washed up on the shore from the Mediterranean in 1988 and was wondering what it might have been a part of and if it's ancient or modern. I took several pics and it's kind of heavy. Any ID help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!

i have found very similar broken tiles on beaches in Greece and Turkey, they are not "modern" in the sense of the last 50 years or so but i was never sure either.
The fact that although a soft material, they are very surf tossed and rounded makes me think at least 100 + years old. But that layered manufacturing process is interesting too. These pieces could easily be tossed scraps from a "remodel" of 100 years ago...after all if you live by the sea, where else are you going to pitch your garbage?

Correct one can find these tiles all over the southern mediterranean european countries, "modern" ones were widely used throughout the 20th century, but are much older. They are called encaustic cement tiles, more info here Cement tile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
My brother has decorated a wall on his balkony with vintage greek originals and I have some spanish repros in my new bathroom.
