Me too Matt! First thing that came to mind. I'm assuming, though, that it's brass, due to the "greenness", which wouldn't do well with the heat and abuse. And the angle of the valve end would seem to push a valve too close to the push rod?
MasterCat, could we get a picture of the part covered by your thumb? It looks like it separates and maybe had or has a linkage in there? (if that makes any sense?)
A spit valve from a brass instrument seems possible, but I couldn't find one quite the same.
