Im going to green check this old thread after viewing some pics posted by SODABOTTLEBOB on another thread. Dg39 got it right.

"Victorian Picture Hanging Nails"

... the majority of this type of nail measure appx 1/2" to 3/4" in diameter across the head and have porcelain or glass inserts.
