Hello All,

It was a miserable little hunt yesterday with Hill Billy, but we both walked away with a great keeper each. We started out the day tracking down an old schoolhouse--which we found the site of. But unfortunately it only seemed to have been in use from about the teens through the 30s. HB got some wheats and I was too bummed out to even hardly take a swing. :P (Strike One) Our hands were freezing--even under double layers of gloves, and the wind was cutting through our long underwear, carhartts, toboggans, and coats. The temps were in the 20s, with lots of icy wind--but the ground hadn't frozen yet.

So I gathered up my resolve, headed back to the car with HB and decided to change game plans. We had permission to hunt for an old homestead in the corn stubble. So we warmed up in the car, made sure we could feel our fingers again, and headed in that direction.

We spent 3 hours searching for the homestead with no success. Nada. Zilch. (Strike Two)

So at that point, the light was waning and we decided to do something we hardly ever do--hunt a yard of an old farmhouse that we had permission for, but had neglected to hunt, until now. HB and I spent some time pounding the front yard, digging matchbox cars and some clad pennies and another wheat or two. :-[ I then dug a nice tombac bell, complete with the iron handle and brass ferrule. I've found pieces of these in field sites, where they've been destroyed by the plow, but never a whole one. I like this relic. :)

I also got a large knife. I don't know whether it is a side knife or a tobacco cutter, but I like this one too. About this time, I started thinking that this yard might have some potential.

Then I dug a plug and out popped this:

A gold class ring! I am thrilled to dig gold each and every time, no matter what it is. This ring will get returned to its owner, but I am happy to have it in my collection to stare at for a while. HB also made a great find behind the house, but I'll let him post it. ;D

Not what I usually dig, but pretty good for the only hunt that we'll have for the next week and a half. (More snow, frozen ground, and cabin fever are coming. :-\ )

Welcome to my world BB. ;D

Will,
That ring is FANTASTIC!!! :icon_thumleft: What a beauty. Gold in the hole is always a wonderful sight. :o
What year is it? :icon_scratch:

Sorry about your first two attempts, but you sure made up for it on the third spot.
Congrats,
-Doug-

Good post. The bell is in great shape. I think your success with the gold was in the waning light. You know how things get when its a waning. Yep storms a coming :coffee2:

BB Nice recovery of someones youthful past. The now older guy is going to fall over :o ..what a story that will be!! I like the bell ,maybe a classroom bell from some old school. Congrats and u will get an honorable mention from CMD

Nice....let us know the year

Like both bell and the ring :headbang: Yards they yield (especially porch part of them). How old your finds might be? What is the date on the class ring?

So pretty, that gold is! :icon_pirat: Good luck on finding the owner! 8)

Nana :)

Sorry our time spent looking for the housesite was a bust. Atleast we got out though. The Bell is sweet and is the first whole one I've seen excavated. I bet they rang that bell calling in the Metal Detectorists out there LOL. Good to see you finding some gold after ten years without. Maybe you would find more if we started hunting newer homes. Anyway, good hunting with you. See you at the next thaw.

That's a really nice ring man.

I know what you mean. Gold is scarce when your hunting old home sites and relics. Every now and then a old gold will pop out of the ground. That ring cleaned up well. What was the yr on the ring. Any info yet on the owner.

Hello all,

Thank you for your kind replies. :icon_thumleft:

I have contacted the school and I am waiting to hear back. The year is 1962, so it is likely that the owner is still around--and also likely that they live in the same area, I think. I may have even knocked on their door for permission before. I hope they said yes! :D

I told the school that I wished to contact the owner myself. I would like for this to be a total surprise. :)

Best Wishes,

Buckles
