Found Bronze Spikes & Wood Timber Diving S Florida
Hi. I was diving off of Broward County Florida for Lobsters and found a strange piece of timber under a newly uncovered rock ledge. The ledge was uncovered by the recent waves from Irene. Anyway, the timber was about 6 feet long and roughly 12"x12". There were some strange circles in it which after doing some internet research think were plugs. They were about 2" diameter. I noticed something shinny in the timber and dug out an approx. 4" long bronze spike. I was able to wrench the timber from the ledge and managed to remove two more. All three are different lengths and dimensions and appear to be hand forged. I think they are bronze (not brass). They are twisted. There were some corroded iron pieces attached to the timber also that I broke off but turned out to be too far gone. There is a bunch more timbers in the area that I did not touch and I think I may have stumbled on some remains of an old shipwreck. Can anyone identify these spikes? Does it sound like I need to go back with my underwater Minelab detector? Thanks.
