Okay, Mastereagle22 and I (Baldingboy) hunted an old plantation site in Southeast Missouri where a slave shack was still standing. It was very rugged terrain and extremely hard to hunt and difficult soil to pinpoint in due to lots of iron etc. I did manage to find this thing right in front of the slave house.

I will follow with pictures, but here is a crude drawing I did in MS Paint. It seems to be ornate with three tabs on the back that are burred to hang on to something. It appears to have a large monogram in the middle that says maybe MCO or just MC (or CO). Has a patent date but it is hard to recognize. This appears to be copper or possibly brass...but I don't think so. Well....check out the sketch. This is between a nickel and Quarter size I believe.

Okay, Here are several views of this thing. It does have a patent date on it at the bottom, but I can't make it out. Anyone know what this is?

A neat item, but I have absolutely no idea as to what it is. Maybe a belt or sash clip. Will be interested to see what people come up with. Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps some kind of animal tag that would pinch onto the ear of the animal kinda like a branding mark?

Thanks for taking a look all.

Does anyone know (other than soap and water), how to clean something like this and bring out the date on the bottom?

Brass? Soak it in olive oil...

I think ya outta leave it alone until you know what it is...

If you're not concerned and are going to keep it in your own collection... soak away.

Remember one day you mght find a picture of one in a book and find out that it's thought to be one-of-a-kind!

Too bad you cant read the patent date, which ends in a 6. Maybe try cleaning with a soft brush and water.
The monogram letters appear to be M, C, and I think O. But in what order? And what is that squigly thing on the C?

I wish too, that I could at least get a date. I did, indeed clean it with a soft brush in water prior to these pictures. I know the monogram has some significance, just don't know what? I think that little loop at the back of the "C" is just decorative, but again, I am unsure.

If you had the date, you could do a patent search. The monogram letters are most likely the initials of the company. But in what order? That little loop on the back of the C is unusual and may have meaning. We need some good researchers.

Have you thought about the Matthews Cotton Gin about 45 miles south of you. I would say it is one of thier seals. I hope this helps you out. Tell ME2 that I'll be training up on my new SE and meet up again with you two soon. I'll be doing some research of your area also.

That is cool. Vinager has always worked best for me. It will take the patina off a nickle but of course there is light pit under it
