It looks like a Classic Head Large Cent counterstamped with a letter L in an upside down heart / upside down L in a heart.

Nice find!

I agree that it's a copper of some sort that is counterstamped. Do you have another large cent that you could use for a size comparison to this object?

I would like to know what you think it is. Cool find IMO.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your feedback - you are correct, after (light) cleaning it is it definitely a large cent with a counterstamp. I have attached a couple more images.

The back is very hard to see, but you can barely make out the matron head outline. I'm thinking this may be the best detail I can get out of it.

Any thoughts from anyone on what the "L" would mean? I'm thinking it's a love token that someone made and wore around their neck, but I wonder if anyone else has seen anything like this? Also, anyone have a general idea on the date? Obviously pre-1858 due to large cents being phased out in 1857, but I'm wondering if anyone has any more information than that based on the image.

Thanks again!
- Bill
