is it just some sort of tag
was found at a park that goes back to the 1800's
was down about 8 inches
found not to far from where I have found seated coins in the past
is slightly bigger than a quarter - slightly thinner too
have not cleaned the back yet - really caked on - does not appear
to have anything on it

That is a really cool find! Don't know what it is though.

It could be a work tag or a slave tag.

Any hope of cleaning the reverse?

well for some reason I was up at 4am so I thought I'd poke around online and try to figure this one out. I'm still thinking trade token, but I didn't have any luck finding a match. A few more details, like what state, and part of the state it was found in (without being any more specific than you want) could help narrow it down.

it sorta reminds me of a work/employee work tag since it has a # on it. If u used a tool or whatever they would keep your tag until you returned the item

It might be an early Boyscout related token. Some of the early Boyscout stuff didn't have the Flur de les behind the eagle and shield. Great find.
Wolverine.

I agree, doubtful (to me anyway) that it's a token. On occasion, the owners would cancel the received tokens by punching holes into them, but yours doesn't seem to me to be a counterpunch. Plus, that eagle looks old, real old.
It's an enigma!
