Found this at a 1700s site.

Seems to be made of pewter.

Any ideas ???

They look like they are supposed to resemble baskets with a lid. I can't imagine a powder measure with diamonds
on it, but perhaps as already mentioned, a snuff spoon. I'm thinking if the diamonds are real, the spoon should be
gold. I really don't know what they are, but they sure are interesting.

Agree that they most likely are not diamonds...... but i,m assuming they been in the saltwater for a possibly a very long time.... wouldn,t the stone be all scratched and stained if they were merely glass and fake ?

And 99% of the time diamonds are set in gold not pewter.

But yes..... they sure are intersting pieces regardless.

Hope can get a positive idea by someone !!

My first thought was "salt spoon", although I must admit I've never seen a salt spoon shaped like that. I did a quick search for salt spoons with precious stones and actually found one:

Obviously not the same shape, but pretty fancy nonetheless.

It is interesting to me that these appear to be measuring scoops. I suspect there was at least one more to the set with 2 chevrons on it. And I've never seen a salt spoon set with different measurements.

Whatever they are they were made to be seen. I don't think you would put stones like that on an item unless you wanted it to be noticed by others.

Maybe sugar instead of salt.

Measurements for 1 lump or 2 (or 3)?

Think you may be onto something--measurers for something.

But seems kinda fancy with the stones.... were meant to be seen as you say.

I,ll definitely be returning to that spot ...asap.... it is -20 here today with the wind chill but giving better for the weekend.

Seems logical that there may be a 3rd piece with 2 markings.

What exactly is a chevron--- the V marks ? what were they used for ? who woulda used them..meaning French / English etc ?

They almost look like acorn shapes to me but then again,I tend to think way outside the box sometimes.

Yes, chevron is the V marks - like miltary ranks. 1 chevron for privates, 2 for corporals...

Chevron is from the old French word for rafters.

I'm thinking these are closer to Victorian era than colonial because they are "faux fancy" (sorry for all the French terms). I think there was more of that in Victorian times.

Do a search on "sugar scuttle" and look at the little scoops they have hanging on them. Maybe these are from a set with multiple scoops? I haven't seen any with more than one scoop yet.

Need to think outside the box on these items... as obviously they are not common items.

Or someone woulda gave a positive ID by now.

Think this must be one of biggest WHAT IS IT threads...lotsa people have viewed it.

Someone will end my curiousity soon i hope !!

On my way to see the local jeweller.

Think I know the outcome of the diamonds... but am curious as to what kinda insight he may have on the pieces.

Will be back in about 3-4 hours.... will post what he has to say !!!!!!!!!!!1

Hi Guys

Just back from the jeweller.... as was suspected the stones are fake....

However ..not any closer to finding out exactly what it is...he had no idea either.

He did say that he thought the pieces were about 80 years old based on the fact of the material used to set the stones in.. the copper colored material that you can see where the stones are missing.

So still a mistery as to what they are !!

Thats pretty much what I said on your other thread. Other than I thought it was part of an early toy.

Do the round portions on top have holes in them? I'm pondering how they might have attached to something.

no holes or signs of broken rings on the ends

I think they're little measuring scoops, perhaps apothecary. The large one is three times the volume of the smaller. Maybe..... :dontknow:

Anything is possible as they are definitely odd pieces.

Surprised there is no positive ID made yet by someone .
