Re-Posted with new pictures.

I think CRUSADER is on to something noting a HOOK of somekind. If anyone could post a picture of this it would be appreciated. Also the period you think this is from. The piece appears to be pewter.

Thanks!
--Bill--

Found this at the 18Th Century Mansion yesterday and need your help. The piece is 1 1/2" long and the long end appears to have been broken off. The other end also appears to have been broken off as well. Since every find on this particular project has the potential of being historically significant to the owners of the mansion, I wanted to seek the excellent help that is available here.

Thanks in advance for looking at this.

Re: Found this at the 18th Century Mansion yesterday and need some help IDing it.

Hello RELICDUDE07 and thanks for showing interest in this find.

Yes, agreed the pictures could be better but the originals at 3mb apiece are no better than the one posted after compressing them. The problem is really the available lighting I used this evening as I was in a hurry to post them. I will retake the pictures tomorrow in daylight. I find that using the flash on "macro" images are not as good as they are in available light with stationary camera. In any case, yes the piece is solid. Since the mansion was build in 1774, and had many owners over the years, I'm just curious to see what this could be.

Again, I'll post new photos tomorrow.

Thanks for your help with this.

I dont know what it is but i agree on the daylight being the best. I turn off the flash, use a halogen light and set camera white balance for indoors on macro. Also I find a med dark blue tablecloth best for background.

You know bigcypresshunter may have this nailed as a door stop. It could have had one of those rubber or porcelain ends that broke of or rotted away. It still would be nice to have a representation of this to know for sure.

Thanks for your help!

As I said, I have found probably well over 500 of these. All different sizes.

Here is a smaller type;

OMG CRUSADER this is it!

Yes finding over 500 of these makes you the undisputed expert! Thanks for posting a picture of one. I was searching the web yesterday trying to find a match but only found ones that were very curved and not at a right angle like yours. I've only been detecting for a short time and jumped on the opportunity to hunt the 18Th century mansion. I have about four acres to cover so perhaps other hooks will show up.

Any idea of the approximate period these particular hooks were used?

Again, thanks for your help with this.

If you have 5 acres, make sure you do ALL of it, piece by piece. Miss no land & good luck.

Hello CRUSADER,

Yes, I've mapped out all areas to hunt on the 4 acre property. When I'm finished, (probably by the fall), I will hunt again. Your comment about being related to horses in some way makes sense. See post again showing pictures taken of the mansion in 1890, where owners son is standing with his wife and a horse and a picture of the mansion as it stands today. In 1774 the mansion was built of all red brick and 60% of the mansion burned down around 1850 (entire east wing plus chapel). The community purchased the mansion in 2001 and is dedicated to preserving it's history where Methodism was born when it's first Bishop Francis Asbury was ordained in it's small chapel (also burned down). The exterior was stuccoed in the late 1800s and restored in 2003. The inside is really a mess but will be a life long project to try to restore it back to the day. The original owner Harry Dorsey Gough who built the mansion, originally owned 1100 acre of land with it and almost 100 slaves to work the plantation. Many of the neighbors are apart of this restoration project and said I could hunt on their adjoining property as well where it is believed to be where the slave quarters were located. The owner name the house "Perry Hall" after his England heritage estate. The town where I live today is named after this mansion "Perry Hall" MD.

Just want to throw a bit of history your way as a token for helping me with this project.

Thanks! --Bill--

I've also found a Tame Ball to a horse rig right around the very spot where he is standing.

Thanks Again!

Now if we could just ID Crusaders finds, we would have it. :icon_scratch: coat hook maybe?

Yes, that would be great if we knew exactly what kind of hook it was.

Thanks for posting.

I think I know. ;D I have seen these before but couldnt place how it worked. I believe they ARE L shaped doorstops and not hooks. They were screwed into the wooden floor behind the door. Look inside the old house and maybe you will find one.

I dont have time to search, but something like this. note the stop is brass but the screw is steel (rusted out on yours)
door stop floor.jpg

Crusader, did any of your hook-like finds have a rubber tip? What do you think? Did they use these in England?
Maybe mojjax could look in book. :icon_study:

Hello bigcypresshunter!

Yes, this sound plausible. I don't have access to the inside of the mansion but can gain access via request. I was planning to do exactly as you noted....look inside for this item and to take many many pictures of as much detail as possible as I do not have normal access to the inside.

Thanks for your information!

I know this is not the place to post known findings, but since you asked, I'll post this one picture.

Nothing major although on Friday I did find a 1921 King George V coin that I was very excited about since this was my first significant coin find. I've also found 3 Indian Head Pennies, 1888, 1897 and 1906.

Thanks! --Bill--
