I got out for a while today. Tons of trash, but I did manage to make a couple of really good (to me) finds. 1953 Silver Rosie, 1946 wheat, and the biggest surprise of the day when I flipped up the button. I can't make out any markings on the back because of the built up corrosion, but I can see a date (on the upper left). I'm not sure what to think here. Could it be?

The other objects are an old hose spout and the back of a wristwatch.

PBK, if you could help me identify this button, I'd be grateful.

;) RR

Mountainplayer, Nice job my friend,you keep it up your gonna catch me on the silver.The button is in very nice condition.Is that dated 1700 or 1760 or1780,can't quite make it out.Sorry I can't help you I.D. it. Same place you've been detecting?What's the deal with the nut?Congrats and keep "plugging" away( punn intended)
Talk to ya later,Bootstrap

Thanks Bootstrap. Yeah, same place. This is exactly my third silver, so I don't think you need to start sweating yet. The date on the button is 1780 or 1789, if it is really a date. I'm thinking it might be some kind of reproduction. There's no way I'd find something that old. I hope PBK or another of the TNet studs can help figure out what it is.

I don't believe it's a repro and I know you there's gotta be plenty of old stuff out there for you to find even though that part of the country wasn't very developed in the 18th century,weren't there spanish missions and stuff in california? Bootstrap

Bootstrap, I hope you're right. There were missions here, but to my knowledge several hundred miles south. I guess it's not out of the question that someone could have carried it up to this area. I'm keeping my fingers crossed,then...

the nut looks like it may have been burryed long ago by a metalic squirl (o;

Nhbenz,

Man, that definitely looks like the button I found. Thanks! The button doesn't seem to be made from a coin, however. Its just too light. I think you're right though, it sure seems to be patterned after this coin.

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Uppermi found the same item or something similar. June 3, 2005 Tnet. Sorry about not posting the link, do a quick search. Knew I'd seen it somewhere before.

That has to be the same button. Mine is complete (has the back and post), while it looks like uppermi's has separated.

No positive ID on that post, though, darn it.

Nice job nhbenz,that sure does look like it but why would they make a button based on an old coin and what would it have been on?
