I have a friend that found this in the yard of a house that was built in 1798. The house sat vacant with hay stored in it for about 23 years from around 1935 until it was restored in 1958. The house is on a farm here in Kentucky. This item as you can see is brass and looks to be cast. We have no clue what this could of been.

In the yard where this was found he also found a large cent from 1827 and flat buttons from early 1800`s. Most items and this also were about eight inches down.

Please help! :)

To me it looks like part of a push to release mechanism.
The larger part being exposed and may have been a thumb release.
You push it in and the forked end would operate a latch.
Just my WAG.

Blacksmiths made so many things from spikes. Sash rod bracket maybe.
