Might be something for gunpowder or shot. I have seen it before.

Looks pretty close guys, the age looks right. But wondering what the "shank" looking thing on the inside would have been for? The mechanism for securing this in place on the end of the powder/shot measure perhaps?

I don't believe it has anything to do with shooting or blackpowder. The shot pouch/flask heads have a notch for the retaining spring, and a horn has two ends to plug. A 1/4" opening (+/-) for the spout and a base plug - which is mechanically attached with pins, pegs or nails. A loose "chained" lid would spill everytime you moved; and when your life depends on dry powder you want a waterproof and solid/secure closure.

I agree with the chain retainer - but likely the other end was a toggle to hold it in the inkwell or Pullman coach brass sink.

Good point, unchecked. Any chance you can find a picture to support your theories? I am quite curious now...

An exact match, no. More "concept" examples . . .

But here's a modern version of a small sink trap with a "captive" plug.

I believe this finial looking item has been posted here before but I cant remember what it is.
It looks like a stopper, first thing I thought, but too small.

I posted it a few years ago, but never got a definitive ID.
