I posted in the "shipwrecks" section, but maybe someone here can help too.

Anvil.jpg

I know it's an anvil ;) but what would it's use have been at sea? Making fishing hooks maybe? Anyone have seafaring knowledge?

It appears to be lead, and hand cast.

Found it on the beach last weekend (Montana De Oro, San Luis Obispo County California).

P.S. I'm new here! Nice to meet you all! And thanks for any help you can give!

Let me take a guess...It looks like an anvil from a monopoly game ? I vaguely remember it. But like I said just a wild guess.... ???

It's too big to be from a monopoly game, and if it's lead it's too soft to use an anvil for it's original purpose(to hammer on) Perhaps it's part of some kind of award or trophy? HH omnicognic 8)

I think Omnicogic is right on target, My Stepdad used to sell prudential insurance and they used to give out those small anvil's that were brass or gold plated and had a small sword stuck in them at an angle, I've got one around here, see if i can find it and post a pic.

Thanks for the guesses guys!

Definately too big to be a Monopoly piece. On the ?shipwrecks? forum they are guessing it to be a boat cleat, not an anvil at all. I thought maybe that too but there are no points of attachment, so I assumed it to be an anvil. I?ll keep you all posted as to what I find out!

Thanks Tank...Sounds like a good theory. Could you elaborate a little...i.e. what is dry block construction? Were the ones you saw the same size too? Finally, where in England did you see them...I have been trying to find something similar on the internet but have yet to find anything at all.

Thanks again! ;D

Have you found any roadrunners with flat heads? You may be on to something Ace. Anyway, a pretty cool find.

Free2Dtect, why did you put the sword back in? You should have burried it so one of us could find it...

Hello, and Welcome to the forum!
Looks like we have something in common, I too just found a small anvil...
Not exactly the same, but it is small like yours...
I was thinking they might have been used by jewelers????

Have ya found out any other details on it? I tried a Google search, but had no luck...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

Hello Leon, thanks for the welcome!

I haven't found any more info besides what has been posted here:

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,10979.0.html

My first guess too was that it was an anvil used on a ship by some craftsman of some sort, but it's still a mystery.

My Uncle who's a diver will be visiting me soon, I plan on running it under his nose for a clue...I'll keepya posted.
