I detected the property of an 1869 one-room schoolhouse for 3hrs today. I’m not surprised that there wasn’t much left to find as I’m sure this property has seen a lot of changes over the years, but I did walk away with a couple of keepers. My first decent find was a crusty large cent; I can just make out the date of 1916 under all the crud. My next find almost caused my heart to skip a beat as I turned over a plug to reveal the edge of what looked to be a very large silver coin! :o I decided that I didn’t want to rub it to see what it was so I headed back to my truck and carefully poured some water on it. This is when I saw the date was 1981, missed it being silver by only 15 years! :laughing7: My next interesting finds were the old brass horse buckle and the large iron ring. I sure have found a lot of buckles this year! :icon_scratch:

Thanks for looking and best of luck to you all,
Dave

Even though it turned out to be a nickle dollar, they are not lost / found very often...hardly ever.

Sweet finds Dave !
Glen

Hey I think that's still pretty cool!

Thanks very much for your post Rick. I used to collect 'real' silver dollars as a kid, but I never thought any of our 'nickel dollars' were actually used in circulation. Sure would've been nice if it had been real though eh! :laughing7:

Have you ever found one of the 'real silver dollars'?
Dave

Thanks Glen, hope you and Carson are doing well. :hello:

I thought so too and it sure got the old heart beating faster! :laughing7:

Thanks for your post Cache,
Dave

Any day that you can put something in the keeper pile is a successful day in my opinion. Great finds.

Dave, No I have not found a "real" silver dollar, for the most part they were not carried arount and used for "money" either. Mostly hoarded, and used for gifts, B-day presents, and what-not. "lucky pocket piece" as you see only the odd one that has any amount of wear. My uncle gave me one when I was born, in a sense a collector since day one. (have had a couple '48s)

My biggest silver found has been 2 half dollars, 1818 NFLD, and 1942 CAN. A dollar sized coin will be on my top ten list next year, as I have crossed off a quite a few different things to this point, it has narrowed things to find to the tougher type finds. I say dollar sized coin, because a brit crown, 8 reale, dutch lion dollar, or french full Ecu will certainly do, in fact I'd rather have any one of those.

Very nice catch indeed Dave and not a common dig as stated before, digging a silver dollar is still on the want list.

Still all excellent finds!! Thanks for posting, that early silver dollar is still out there waiting.......:icon_thumleft:

Still nice finds, congrats! That Canadian is probably worth more than our funny money, and will probably increase as we drowned in debt.

That's for sure poorman15, thanks for your post!

I too was given a couple of 1964 Silver Dollars when I was born. I didn't think we ever used 'silver dollars' as everyday currency here in Canada. I also remember getting some of these 'nickel dollars' at the bank just to see the look on the cashiers face when I paid for something with them! :laughing7:

Thanks for your post J!
I'm not greedy, I'd settle for finding a silver half any day! :laughing7:

Thanks very much wayfas4u!
Best of luck to you as well,

Our CDN currency is still not as valuable as your 'US Greenbacks', I even wish the value of our dollar would devalue further! When this happens products that are made here in Canada are more affordable for us to export to you in the States . . . so ends today's lesson in economics! :laughing7:

Thanks for your post and best of luck to you Msbeepbeep,

I have been to that site soooo many times and pulled quite abit,
Never ever think a site is cleaned out.
I'm glad to hear that someone has recovered some decent finds here whiskeyman! :occasion14:
I'd hate to think that any relics might be lost forever when the airport is built and the property is posted 'off-limits'!
Dave

Great story, I've always loved the look of Canadian coins.

Thanks buddy, I've always loved finding American coins!
The oldest US coin I found here in Canada was an 1892 Barber Dime.

Here's a pic of the 'silver dollar' all cleaned up following a 12hr ride in the tumbler.
Best of luck to you,
Dave

Thank you JG!
Unfortunately, we never used silver dollars or even half dollars as 'everyday currency' here in Canada unlike you guys did in the States. So, to even find a 'nickel dollar' in the ground here is quite special!
Dave

Bet there's more there: big area to thoroughly cover! My first silver half came this year after 20 years of detecting.I ended up with these 5 for this year:

halves for 2013.jpg Still haven't found a silver dollar yet.
