Found this little gem in the wall of an old house today. Strangely it's the first saloon token I've found down here. I tried to find some info on the place, but haven't turned anything up just yet. If anyone has any info on it, I'd love to know more. Especially an age range on it. It's from the "Riflemen's Cafe and Oyster Saloon" which I have never heard of, but it sounds like an interesting place.

Very cool token

Yeah, I've tried pretty much every reference I can find locally and still nothing.... A friend suggested earlier that the place may actually have been in Chalmette near the battlefield and that Riflemen could be in reference to the Kentucky and Tennessee Riflemen who fought there.... Seems like a possibility to explore...

Any idea what kind of value something like this would have? I'm not really thinking about parting with it, but it would be interesting to know

I emailed a pic to my token guru. Let's see what he has to say. :)

What's the diameter of the token and can you tell what it's made of? Thanks!

Great piece! I hope you'll consider listing it on the tokencatalog online. It's likely unlisted. Do you have the Louisiana token book? If not, shoot me a reply and I'm happy to look it up and see ifit's listed when I get home.

Cheers,

Buck

Just added it to the tokencatalog, (listing #442746) it sure would be cool to know more about it

Remove the surface crud / dirt with a toothpick. Soak it in olive oil for a day or two. Remove remaining dirt with toothpick. Repeat, if necessary.
Congrats on a nice find.

Token Guru has never seen it... Looks like you have a mystery and a rare token!

His reply..

Well, it’s not in the Louisiana catalog… That would have been the easy answer.

There are some tokens with a similar style reverse… but seem to be slightly different…

C.W. BOSTROM / LUNCH / ROOM
ISABELLA LUMBER CO. / LIMITED / KENTWOOD / LA.
VICTORIA HOTEL / N.O. / LA.
C. GUILLORY / NOT / TRANSFERABLE / NORMA, LA.
JOHN LECHE / & CO / NOT / TRANSFERABLE / THIBODAUX, LA.

The difference I think I see is that on that token, there is a post sticking up slightly on the 5 (rising above the upper horizontal). I don’t see this on the examples listed above.
These tokens date to the 1890’s to early 1900’s.

No luck finding anything on Ancestry.com

The value of a token is based on rarity with bonus points for interesting subject matter looks like yours fits into both categories congrats again on a great find

Excellent! I think that's a great resource for us to add what we find to. At least collectors know they're out there. Yours is such an interesting token due to the combination of the words "Oyster" and "Saloon." Certainly an appealing token.

I looked in the Crawford book on LA tokens and it's not listed. So, at least for now, you have the only one known! Often, unlisted LA tokens command prices around the $100 range, but I'd imagine more for yours due to the word Saloon and the interesting wording.

Of course, to own something that no one else has--priceless!

Cheers,

Buck

Yeah that's a nice one

I love finding those unique items

A keeper for sure! Congrats
