Hello all, I finally had a chance to get out to the site that I found the 1806 Half Cent again. I had known of the site for a long time, as it is my fiances parents property, but have not had much of a chance to MD there. I remember her parents telling me of how there was an old house there before they had bought the property. The house had been torn down about 20 years ago, and the house that they live in now was built. There is also an old barn on the property. Anyways, I was detecting there back in December and found an 1806 Half Cent, I was so excited because I hardly ever find coins, and then to find a Half Cent! There was nothing else found at the site that day, but when I helped them clean out the barn, I found a very old book. I opened it up to find a hand written inscription saying "Jane Elizabeth Whitten, Was, on November 1, 180_(page is torn). When this you see, think of me when I am old and in my grave." I thought that was kinda creepy. I turned to the title page and saw the title "The History of the American Revolution". The page that had the date and author is missing, but I did some research and found out that it is a first edition published in 1789 by David Ramsay. I think I would classify that book as my best find ever. I mentioned it in a post back in December, but never got around to posting pictures or a story.

Now lets get back to "Todays Finds". I went back out to my Fiances parents property again thismorning and swung the coil for a couple of hours. Yet again, like before, I was starting to give up because I was finding only a couple of keepers (a small brass buckle and thimble). I started heading back to their house, and swept the coil under a very large oak tree and got a very strong signal. I started digging and tearing through the roots and pulled out a small round disc, hoping and praying that it was a coin. I took it back to the house and started washing it off. When I took the toothbrush to it, I saw a face come out on the front and just about fainted when I saw that it was ANOTHER Half Cent. Immediatly after I regained myself from shock, I started working at the date, and almost fainted again when I saw that it was ANOTHER 1806!!! And it is in much better shape than the other one! I think I might have gone a little overboard when I started using the wire brush. Oh well, it will stay with me until I die regardless of the value.

I have posted pics of the book as well as the half cents. The better half cent is the one I just found, and the worn one is the one I found back in December. Also, notice the pic of the text in the book. The "e" in "resided" is upside down! Very interesting. Let me know what you think. Thanks and HH!

Excellent find's foxhound....If it wasn't for history I would have never gone to school.I'm sure you'll have more to post about the book later.Great job and keep us posted, very interesting.HH!!

I think History was about the only subject in school in which I did well. Math and everything else just went in one ear and out the other, LOL. I work at the cabin where William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition lived with his brother (George Rogers Clark). Its also where the expedition started. I dress in my reenacting clothes and give talks to school kids and demonstrate how the muskets were loaded and fired, and I also fire my rifle for them. I can post pics if anyone would like to see them.

Lately the liberal nitwits have been getting reenacters arrested and their weapons confiscated when they are invited to speak at school history classes. Watch out. exanimo, ss

I've heard stuff about that. The good thing is that they come to the cabin instead of us going to the school. They try to take more and more history away from our kids every year.

Man! Thats a great story and finds! My hunting buddy just found a 1807 large cent yesterday. Tsgman

Awesome book, & coins,,, Great save on all, WTG!!!
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

thanks for sharing your incredible finds good luck hunting every square inch of that property. hh

FoxHound,
I'll be sending you a PE with my address in it! Am a Lewis&Clark devotee, having discovered that Meriwether Lewis's aunt (his mother's sis) was my 8th great-grandmother. He had no children, so I guess that's about as close as I can get to a famous ancestor. The Lewis and Clark families were very, very intermingled and have a really exciting history. Would love to see some info you have there on the cabin, area, etc.

And CONGRATULATIONS on your excellent finds!

Really? What the heck is that all about? What are they arrested for? Having replica weapons? That's incredulous! What's next? I remember going to school with a Buck knife on my side carrying a motorcycle wallet with a chain and a t-shirt with a big pot leaf on it! Boy how times have changed.

Thats cool Noodle. Send me a PM with the info that you would like to know. I mostly know about Clark's brother, George, as well as some stuff about the expedition as it happened out here. Like I said, just let me know. HH!

Fox,
Sometimes you don't have to use a detector to find the really good stuff.AS I always say "luck is better than wealth". Does'nt hurt to have both though.

GReat piece of history, the book and the coins.

Just talked to a book dealer last night and asked her to notify me if any books by David Ramsay came in. I also just spent last weekend in an antique bookstore that had volumes upon volumes. I am returning in a couple ofweeks and will look.....how much would you be willing to pay for it??? Also....Google David Ramsey and see what comes up...there is some really interesting articles on him and also places that might have his copies of books......I will see what I can find .....and do you know he died before that book was finished ....and that his brother in law finished it for him..I cant remember his name off hand...something like Stanhope

If you really want a copy of the second volume,I would suggest www.abaa.org/index.html.If they don't have it they can probably get it.There is an online version available for reading purposes at another website.

I think for that price, I would go back to the barn and keep looking...If they had volume 1 ,volume 2 is probally there also.....If you dont have time , I could probally manage to go look for you ...... ;)
