Thanks to a beach improvement idea, they trucked a bunch of sand in. Now, the black sand is starting to appear at the waterline and is about 1/2" thick. The dry area on the beach seems to be a mixture of small stones, clay and sand, and somewhat hard to dig with a hand scoop. Panning the mix gave me about 1/8 of a pan of black sand, so it's rich in magnetite. Hit a #100 on the third pan during the sampling. The trucked sand looks and acts like the stuff from upstream of the beach I was working that got washed out.
Also got to talk to a woman who was interested, and set her straight about recreational/amature mining. She thought the miners in her home state (Cali) were destroying the streams. The trucked sand was a perfect example of a hard packed river bottom, and through that, she understood what we do to help the rivers fish population.
A good day!
