Over the last 2 months or so, we have gotton access to some new land to look for artifacts on. My husband always helps some of our neighbors(ranchers) burn their pastures off in the Spring before they start getting cattle in, and this opens up a lot of land and landmarks you wouldn't normally see because the grass is always so high. We found a couple of really neat rock shelters(didn't do any digging). Also found a spot at the base of a big rock bluff where there were still fire rings on the ground! I wasn't sure what I was seeing was real until I noticed there were approx. 8 to 10 fire rings laid out at the base of that bluff. That was an awesome sight! I never think about seeing something like that around here---It seems more like something you would see in the Southwest desert.
We also found many, many grinding holes in rocks near the rock bluffs and I found my second mano there, under a hickory tree. One rock that had three grind holes in it, was laid across a little creek---I wonder maybe if the Indians didn't crack the acorns/hickory nuts there on that rock and leach them in the creek?
The rock shelters we found had hash marks on the walls and one had a grinding rock in the floor of the shelter with hash marks on it. Also found a creek bank with another midden in it and a creek bank on the edge of the camp that was eroding away and flint/couple of broke arrowheads had washed out. We took lots and lots of pictures and I just finished a little youtube video to share with you guys and gals. We didn't find any outstanding artifacts--just lots of flint and a few brokes, but we saw some wonderful sights! There are cattle in the pastures now and we won't be able to go back until next winter. But we have pictures to look at until then. The big bluff where the rock shelters are at is caving off really bad. All along the top of that bluff, on the ledge, there was lots of flint/debitage scattered out on the ground. Maybe those cattle will kick some artifacts loose and we'll find them next winter. Hope you guys enjoy the video and thanks for looking!

Sandcreek, Thanks for the video. Beautiful land for sure. Having the kids grow up enjoying God's Creation even makes it better. It brought back memories of exploring with mine. Great job! Lone Star

Oh, we could probably go back in there some, Terry, but these cattle are pretty wild right now and I don't want the kids or I to get hurt. And the snakes are really bad along this bluff--We saw a good size copperhead the last time we were there. When fall/winter gets here, we'll go back.

Thanks FBB---Yes, this place does have a lot of history. I think there were about three different big camps along these creeks, and it must have been a large group of people, because of all the debitage/flint scattered everywhere. The kids and I were just amazed at the stuff we saw.

Thanks Lone Star--Yes, it is a true blessing to be able to take my kids out and enjoy God's Creation. Letting them walk the land and learn how to recognize the signs of the ancients being there---it was just too cool for us to find those fire rings. I kept thinking "Why are all those rocks at the base of this bluff?" Because I knew the weren't just rocks that had came off the bluff. And some were kinda reddish colored. Then started to see a pattern and how they were in circular rings and it hit me--They're fire rings! Probably the thing that impressed me the most was the marks on the rock shelter wall---And how deep the grooves were. I guess that is how they ground off the edges of their artifacts? By rubbing them on that sandstone wall?
:hello: Thanks guys!!

That is a great video great music where did you find it ? That look's like a great place it looks like they lived there a very long time,. the fire rings were great. It look's like they used the grinding holes in the rocks a very long time. I agree they prob, made the hash marks on the rockshelter wall shaping and sharpening stone tools. That is a great pkace thank you very much for posting it. I really enjoyed it.

The music is By Robert Tree Cody...The first song is "Lakota Lullaby" and the second one is "In Camps of Time Past". Doesn't he just have a wonderful voice? Those songs seem to fit this video. You can get them on iTunes.
Thanks so much, flintdigger, I'm glad you enjoyed the slideshow video. :hello:

Nice job on the video Sandcreek, I enjoyed it. Some of the high spots overlooking the creek below look really good to me. Nice finds and good luck in your new area.

Yes, those high spots were exactly where we were finding artifacts and flint, Th3rty7. I have tried to learn how to read the land and look for the high spots and erosion. The camp fire rings were also on the high side of the creek next to the rock bluff. All along those little trees you see growing up in front of (and in that bluff where the shelters are), there was flint everywhere. That's also where most of the grinding holes were--especially the really deep holes. On top of the bluff there was also much debitage. There is also some natural springs near the bluff. So, it was a good place for a camp with them always having water and good shelter.
Thanks Th3rty7.

Very cool, and sounds like it might not have been found til now.

Yes, the only people who are ever in this pasture are the cowboys when they are feeding the cattle. Its almost unreal to me that those fire rings are still visible. I think there are lots of 'signs' the ancient peoples left behind, you just have to look for them.
Thanks RGINN!

Great video! I enjoyed it thouroghly. I just love this land, don't you? Thanks for sharing what you have learned. cletus knows where some fire rings are, maybe they are still around in the really remote areas. this was a nice presentation, I'm gonna have to head out to look while that song and music are still echoing in my head.

Yes, I do love this land. We live in such a beautiful place with so much history. You said cletus knows where some fire rings are---Is that the general area of where she found the Calf Creek? I would love to find one of those!
We found another midden in the creek bank about a 1/2 mile up the creek from where the rock shelters are. I took some pictures to show you, Lisa. The creek bank was probably 8' tall and the midden was located about 3' down from the top.
