Found these today on the sand/gravel bar and quite a few pottery shards too. The first pic I think might be a spear point, it's flat on one side but most every type of point I'm finding is flat on one side, I'm thinking the white one with the sharp point might be a drill.

The second pic, one on the top left has part of it broken off but I find a lot of those types of points in all sizes... can someone tell me what type of point it is...also, does anyone have an ideas what point in time these were made?

I can't really say for certain. The creek patina on quartzite makes ID super challenging. I'll look closer. I do see the point.

The big one in the first pic looks like the same shape and size of a piece I just posted yesterday. Most of the expert members told me that it was a preform...a piece that was started but never completed...A close up photo may confirm this with those guys...looks like you had fun!

NCPeaches,
First of all, thanks for posting your finds. Looks like you have a great spot. Would love to see the pottery, might help with ID also.
Thanks!!
BCI

This is the first shard, also the largest about 2" x 1 1/2" and what got me looking more.

The shape almost resembles a Morrow Mountain type. It looks like you are on a good spot especially if you are getting pottery. That means they were living there maybe for a period of time. Thanks for sharing.

I have something else I found about a month ago and posted in the What is it? section. This piece was in with all the other stuff on the creek. I was told in the What is it? section that it was a spall...what do you guys think?

Peaches probably just a discarded piece they may have thought about using and did not. Want to welcome you to artifacts. Hope you continue sharing your finds with us.

I will put some more pottery shard pics up tomorrow...there seems to be several different colors, thicknesses and designs and none have been as large as that one. Also, most of the points look like Guilfords and alot of those are eroded. One thing I do know about this area, the last native american tribe that lived here were Catawba.

Thank you Tnmountains...it's a pleasure to be here and I've got so much to learn and having this right in my back yard is just crazy! lol All these years had gardens and never saw a thing and there it all was right there in the creek. Thinking that red belly water snake is gonna have to move on downstream now :laughing7:

Look at ya! I think you called it. What we can learn in a day! Good eye!

Nice to see some pottery shards. JMHO, I have seen so many rocks from NC, I would fill my pockets with what you had found, run back all excited & post my finds, only to be told (by NC collectors, friends btw) that they are just rocks. Looking at the pic they look like 'sugar' quartz, well this material is not the best for knapping points with, it just breaks off into sugar grains. Sometimes the elements shape the rocks making us think they are artifacts but, in fact they are not. I can tell you something though Peaches, I never in all my days hunting in NC did I find any pottery. Congrats sweetie.. Good luck hunting.

You must have been located in the piedmont. Pottery is a rare commodity for us. Our soil has an off the chart acidity. After years of looking for pottery in my county, I finally did it. This may sound selfish, but I have put so much work in to finding local pottery, I'm not publicly posting the land scape in which I find it. Any one feel free to PM me if you care to know.

I'm in the Piedmont and the shard I posted is the best one so far...I've found several others but at first they appear to be porous roundish rocks but after I wash them and set them out to dry their patterns show up.

Rocks or tools...some of my larger finds...particularly interested in what type of rock these are...the thin ones sound like glass or metal when you toss or tap them.

Nice looking stuff Gator! I once had some pieces exactly like a couple of those. Molly, with your mention of the Sapphony tribe, I know you were in my area. I mean the same creeks and fields. The quartz mines are probably old copper mines. My family has a farm with old mines on it. We have mounds of milky quartz that was blasted out of the tunnels. I am friends with chief Otis, chief of the Sapphony, or Indians of Person Co. The Occoneechee people left lots of history here as well. Cool to read tribe names that I'm familiar with.
