Found this big coin near the river today and got it cleaned up just enough to identify it. I was just wonderin', what was a coin like this worth back then? Did they just say, "That'll be 2 Coppers."?

It looks like someone tapped on it with their bayonet or knife. There was some fightin' that took place nearby, c.1814.

Nice find Cycluran. Can ya make out the words? Thanks for sharing...

It says AUCTORI: CONNEC: A few of the letters are illegible, but most are there.

Worth finding the variety on that one, as with any CT.

Nice coin. It is for sure a 1785. I can easily tell by the head style. FYI, there are over 350 different varieties of Connecticut coppers. And with each year there are many different head styles, legends, punctuations etc. There are about 40 different 1785 varieties. The most valuable of all is the 1787 with the reverse figure facing right instead of left. There are some obverse dies that were used with different reverse dies from different years and in some cases, reverse dies from different states. As far as value back then, CT coppers traded at 16 to the shilling. NJ's as they were slightly heavier and contained more copper traded at 12 to the shilling. I've been collecting colonials for more than 25 years and when I had more time in the late 90's up until about 2003 I was a contributor to the colonial section of The Guide Book of United States Coins, the Redbook.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if every find we make came with a little insight as to the life of the person that lost it? If that coin could talk........Congrats on a super dig. Thank you so much for sharing with us. We all learn from other's finds and the posts that accompany them.

Nice going on the CT copper.

Great find. I dream of finding something that old in Tennessee coin wise. Good I.D!
