What the heck was someone doing in the woods with a foot long knife? Is this a skinning knife or just a deadly weapon? Any input on what it was used for and how old it is would be appreciated.

I'm a hunter and I would never use a knife that big to gut a deer. 2 1/2 to 3 inch blade is plenty but every has their own preferences

Well, everyone's got their own preferences as you say. But since I was a kid, Ive seen knife sizes go down for skinning and dressing. I like a 4 1/2 drop point myself. They will all do the job, but this particular one was a common size then.

The slickest one I ever saw doesn't even look like a knife. And works more like a zipper.

I think OJ gave knives a bad name. The point is, there was a time before OJ.

The 3 inch rule is what gets me. Just a way to trump up charges against someone.

I carried a nasty looking hunting knife around as a kid and no one ever bothered me. I also walked around my neighborhood with a BB gun and no one thought twice about it. If a kid did that now, they'd end up with 50 bullet holes in them, compliments of the police. Cops have gotten WAY too trigger happy...
