Sure looks like a plant fossil, if the stone was not imported but one of the normal rocks in the area, than no doubt there will be many more of them in the area. If it was a brought in stone from an another area, than that maybe it for finding more. I hope it is local for you, fossils are neat to collect and it was thru fossil and rockhounding that got my oldest son and I into metal detecting, one thing just led to another..

Some type of early fern? It appears to be a fossil impression of some type.

Yeah it is local. The university actually bring students just down the road from me. They research the ledges. Some people actually remove some of the ledges to keep the fossils, which isn't "quite" right. I just never found one myself that I felt I could keep. Great my husband is going to be thrilled I now have yet another hobby! ;D

I really am excited about it, thanks folks!!!!!!!!!!

CG,

It's obviously a plant. May be a type of fern but it doesn't look like the ones I used to find in coal shale many years ago. Sounds like the University can ID it for you. Great Find!!!!!!!!!!

Monty you aren't the first one to mention that. I may have it upside down too. I think you just may be right. I'll try to spin it around, see if that helps.

Thanks!

P.S. And I know how you feel about birds :D.

I like most birds, just not the ones with bad manners and starlings.

Hoss, if you want fossils, come to Oklahoma. Anywhere there is a rock pile you will find a ton of fossils. I see university students out on field trips digging fossils out of the sides of rocky hills all the time. Apparently we were once under an inland sea and when it dried up all the limestone rock remained and limestone is full of fossils.

Not really being up on fossils as I should, I can't say for sure if it really is a bird or a plant. But interesting enough, in the second picture , up in the righthand corner I see a tiny human skull! Now you got me seeing things ::). Monty

I think we may all be in the heat a little too long here and there, that's why I decided to put it in What is it instead of todays finds :D

Looks like a bird or fish fins to me. Either way it looks like a fossil of some sort. Lucky you! Nice find.

I found this today while looking for Indian Artifacts. I'm pretty sure it is a fossil. Can any one help with what this could have been. My first fossil. I hope that's what it is.

I recently discovered an email address where you can send fossil pictures to the University of Gainesville to get Florida fossils identified. There is a good chance that your state might have the same type of service. I googled "fossil collecting Florida" and found the clubs, informatinn and idendification email address.

For those of you in Florida, the email address is rhulbert@flmnh.ufl.edu

CG in the second picture I differently see and old Indian face ! I see his aging eyes, nose, and mouth as well as chin. The fossils looks like feathers to his headdress ;D Well this is what I see> but of course I am an eccentric artist ;D
