Metal Detecting
Hey guys! First post here..

So, I've been metal detecting for a few years, started with really bare-bones equipment my dad had, then moved into a Fisher F2. It's come time for me to get back into it and purchase an upgrade.

I found a good price on a never used AT Pro on the Facebook Marketplace that included all the original Kelly Co freebies and he was also throwing in a lesche (also from Kelly Co) for $500 flat. Pretty good deal, in my opinion!

I started asking around and talked to some friends and they were all pushing me to give Nokta a try and suggested the FORS CoRe. On Kelly Co, brand new, it is only $95 more than I could buy the AT Pro for, so not out of budget. It definitely looks well built and the videos online speak highly of its usability. I was actually able to find ONE video comparing the AT and the Nokta, and they gave the "prize" to Nokta.

So, to make a long story short, what is your best recommendation? The tried and true AT Pro? Or the somewhat new, and surely more advanced, FORS CoRe?

Thanks!
Ben

I've tested both fairly extensively and given all the pros and cons of each, I personally would go with the tried and true water proof AT Pro. As I always say however, that's just the view from my foxhole.

I use both the Nokta Ford and the atpro. I've had thebpro about two years, and the nokta for a year. The at is a great machine, we'll built and performs great. I have found large cents at 8+. The water proof housing is also great for those rainy muddy days. I love this machine!! I've heard people say that it is hard to learn, but with practice it's an amazing all around detector. The Nokta is also a very nice machine. The machine is we'll balanced withe control box on bottom, and the readout in the handle. The led in the handle display. Lights up when displaying vdi, is very easy to read and pinpoint is right on that handle. The Nokta seems to go a little deeper than the Garrett, finding a dime at 8+. The real difference however is in the speed of the machine, allowing it to quickly process multiple signals and seperate them. Great for digging in trashy areas. The problems with the machine are: the housing is not weatherproof (you can buy a cover) this is a drawback considering everything is set from the bottom LCD. Another serious drawback is the placement of the headphone jack. Of course the jack is a quarter inch, requiring either headphones with a large jack, or an adaptor. This jack sticks directly out the back allowing it to catch on everything and anything. Within two months of having the machine I had gone through three jacks, and was probably lucky it didn't break the internal jack. I do a lot of woods hunting and this is a severe inconvenience. Long story short I would take the Nokta on performance, including seperation of targets and swing speed. However if I am going out to a rough spot and need something tough and dependable, I'll take my Garrett anyday. This year I will be getting a deus and I am hoping that will fulfill all my dreams, lol.

Thank you both for the helpful words! I actually went ahead and purchased the Nokta FORS CoRe; it just arrived today! When weather permits (you know Midwest weather... Snow one day, then 65 the next!) I will get a chance to take it out and see how it performs. Luckily, I don't usually detect in overly woodsy areas, so the jack (hopefully) won't be an issue for me. I have not yet picked up a weather-proof cover, but plan to add that to the next order (dying for a pinpointer).

Thank you guys again for the wise words!
