Beside meat hooks, they also look like grappling hooks, with a rope tied on, used to fish stuff out of the water, drag the bottom, etc. I remember as a kid we were fishing off a pier at Avila, California, so this would be late 40's early 50's, and Dad set his pole down to do something else. I don't know if the sea lion got the bait or if while dad was away a fish took the bait, or because the sea lion wasn't hooked perhaps he just got a bit tangled in the line, but what ever, a sea lion in front of witnesses pulled the pole and all into the water. Dad took a skiff and a grappling hook, and drug for a bit, picked up the line, and recovered his pole and reel and the sea lion was gone, which is why I'm guessing grappling hook.

My grandparents used them to lower milk and butter in and out of the well. That was before electricity made it out to the farm. Had to keep things fresh.
