This isn't metal, but Buckshot found it and we have a "what is it" question. I know there are a lot of hunters on this forum, so here goes. we think it's part of an elk antler, maybe whitetail, not sure if that can be determined or not. What caused the little hole? Of course we are hoping a musket ball, or something like that, and maybe some of you hunters have seen this kind of damage on an antler. ??? Pure conjecture on our part, but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks for looking!

Tag--I want to see what this turns out to be, naturegirl. Josie and I find lots of sheds that have been chewed on, but have never found one with a perfectly round hole. I kinda wonder if SkyPirate isn't on to something with the fire making idea. Now that would be really cool! I found a rock the other day (on a camp site) that looks like it was used to start a fire. I'm sure the Indians used whatever was handy to get a flame started.

I was jiust about to sggest..But Skypirate beat Me to it.
The top handle with the bearing block would be about the hardest part of bowdrill to improvise so it may have been carried a long time before lost.

Also the fact that the "hole is on the top side of the tine(it would be facing up)kind of makes it unlikely a bullet strike....in hindsite

Where did you find this? Near any know Indian inhabitated areas? This could be the top part of a fire making kit used by indians. See the picture: it would be the part to hold the stick at the top to keep it from drilling a hole in your hand while using a bow to turn the stick to make friction at the bottom and start a fire.

not to put a damper on your idea,
but if it were to be used for making fires then there would be a circular wear markings in the hole, this looks simply crushed.

That's ok chukars, we want the right id, Buckshot was thinking the same thing, it would be a worn-smooth hole. This looks like an impact. Certainly all ideas are welcome, :D it's just a curious thing, we may never know. Thanks all!
