Here are what I would call typical Clovis flute spalls. Typical for ME, the way I knap. I can take more close ups of the ends if you want. Let me know which ones.

These long flute spalls come from making Cumberland points.

These are flute spalls from Folsom points I made. Note #4. I got a narrow flute the first time, reset the nipple and fluted it again with better results.

These are overshot flute spalls. The flute dove through the preform and removed the tip. This is most common on Folsom. Rarely on Clovis. I've never seen a Cumberland overshot on an authentic point but I did it a lot of them myself making Cumberlands. More if you want it. Let me know.

Joshua, looking through my box I would say a lot of the flute spalls break during manufacture. Especially toward the thin fragile tip. Gary

Well now I know why youā€™re so good with regional material identification... Do you still have the Folsom made from #5?

Here you go Kantuck. The point is 2 1/8". I forgot the scale. I made this in the 90's. Material is Alibates from Texas Panhandle. The color is most correct in the pic with it in my hand. Gary

I am a flintknapper, but I avoid fluted points because of the possibility of snapping. However, I'll be trying different methods of fluting soon.

The points I have fluted were Obsidian, and boy, let me tell you, those flute flakes are more than razor sharp. I sliced a piece of printer paper in half, with one of those things with barely any pressure at all.

Thank you Gary. That's beautiful! I can't wait to see some of your others...

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

Gary,

I canā€™t thank you enough for posting these. I wonder if you could (at some point) post a photo of (or describe) the method you use to flute a point.

I started this thread because of the rarity of fluted points in my area, and my desire to learn more about them.

I also enjoy collecting flakes of every local lithic. I have a beautiful collection and have wondered whether any could be from a flute.

***And, thank you Charlie for posting an ancient ā€˜two-pieceā€™ star of the show artifact.
Love that one!
