Howdy folks! his is one of my best finds ever....hit a big signal, thought it was a can...checked it out just in case...one little square of flint popped out and I thought at first it was a scraper...then another and another popped out as well as the musketballs. i realised i had found a dropped pouch of musket flints with musketballs. Dragoon buttons have been found on the site.

But Congrats !

VERY cool find congratulations! 8)

Steve

THAT...is just about the sweetest find I have ever seen. I would recommend the banner but it seems that every time I recommend the banner it doesn't make it. Maybe someone else will suggest it.

the pouch disintegrated long ago..those flints and musketballs were in the ground about 170 years....i know they were in a pouch by the size of the hole they came out of. if they had been just dropped, they would be scaterred, these were in a tiny space, les than 3 inches in diameter, all packed together. i would love for it to be a banner, that would be awesome! thanks!

WOW, Great find never would of found this in new york, most of the time i find quartz or a rare orange one.
did you find this in a plowed field.how deep was this.

thanks! these were found on top of a midden. Middens are made up of discarded food shells. the midden complex was used by many types of soldiers, from Dragoons, Confederate, Union, and Rough Riders. Midden is solid shell, so relics don't get very deep in the ground...these flints were in a 3" diiameter hole about 5" deep.

Mr Archaeon,

Congrats the button tells it all, are you near Fort Brook or did you find these items in St Pete? You have uncovered a temp camp site for foraging near Tampa Bay. You have a U.S. issue general services button from the 1820's, I have three of them. You need to call Kelly co in Orlando and order Harry Rainey's book entitled "Camps, Batteries and Forts of Florida". You have discovered the second Seminole war at your site. If you have any questions about your finds please post them for us to view for ID purposes. Remember these numbers on your MD +32 to +76. Good luck.

Some pics for you.

thanks armchair! yes they were found in st.pete. there are also dragoon button found on the site. i will get all my finds from the site and post them here in the next few days. i will also be sure to order that book, thanks!
what do the numbers mean for the MD? i am about to buy either a Tejon or Vaquero, which will most likely uncover new finds at the site since my shadow x2 doesnt seem to go very deep. thanks for your post.
