well the fleur de lis is thought of as a " french" symbol it was also used as spanish symbol as well once the french house of borbon took over the spain crown in 1701.

I don't think that is a fleur de lis symbol :icon_scratch:

Agreed, similar but not.

Could we have a better picture of the back?

Looks like something that would decorate the ends of a curtain rod? Monty

I think some better pics would help. Is the piece enamel or is it green patina?

Re: Better Pic of the back

Thanks fellas for all the Info,

This was found at civil war union encampement with no no modern targets around, and no thats not enamel, just some nice, highly coveted patina, if only all my brass find came up like that!! Not a fleur de lis huh? Ok. Idont know what a curtain rod peice would be doin out there. The bolo- scarf slide, thats feasible, although more of a navy item, right? Thanks again, snaps

There is a chance, although the piece is a little small, that because of the flat(ish) back band it's a napkin ring. Maybe not... The scarf slide is a great idea.

The patina on 1st pic looks shiny with a reflection of the flash. Is that due to cleaning of relic?

Please post a better pic of this coveted patina :icon_sunny:

Proberbly the way it came out the ground IS :P you can fake patina...but it takes a little time  I would go with napking ring as well, a nice find :)

I'm not doubting it's patina, however would like to see a better pic. I've yet to find this shiny patina (based pic provided), unless the light is due to water/oil on piece.

It's a very nice piece snaps :icon_sunny: Please post a good quality daylight pic. The beautiful smooth patina must be due to metal alloy.

It's not a napkin ring. It's the wrong shape, and it's weight tells you that it would be an ordeal to balance a rolled napkin so the design remained face up. I agree it is almost certainly a collar slide. It is incomplete, as evidenced by the little rivet on the bottom which once held another decorative suspension perhaps like the one in this link. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...+scarf+slide&ndsp=21&hl=en&sa=N&start=21&um=1

This item appears to me to be a Scarf Ring or Scarf Slide, (female type). It does appear to be vintage in nature, I would say late Victorian or after. I do believe that the green color is paint and not patina. The paint would have been more glossy before it found its way into the ground. The Scarf Slides would have a second ring which attached on the bottom of the device where the attachment weld or solder spot is on this piece. The other end of that second ring would be attached to the existing ring at the rear of that ring.

Just my thoughts. There are pictures on the web if you search Scarf Ring, Scarf Slide or Scarf Holder. If you throw in Victorian or Vintage, you can see some older ones.

I agree, in the most part, but I don't think it painted. Although it looks shinny, I have seen patina like this. Some brass with cleaning or a bit of wax (or even none) will look like this.
