Instead of outright censorship a society with free speech uses a tactic called "Poison the Well" or "Muddy the Water" to quell ideas. In this case they use Flat Earthers to try to associate them with other plausible conspiracies thus bundling them into one basket and calling everyone who thinks outside the box a kook.

They used to use "Aliens" as a well poisoner, but so many people now believe in aliens they had to revive a 500 year old myth.
