A couple of questions will help us figure out the nature of your 'button'. :icon_scratch:

What part of the country was it found in?
What makes you think it's British, it may be French?
The design of the shank, leads me to think it was attached to something thicker then a coat, possibly a messenger bag?

Clearer pics of the back attachment would also be helpful. :thumbsup:

That type of button was used in the Napoleonic wars and afterwards. Probably lost by an immigrant.

the reason i'm thinking British is the design on the number 5. it looks similar. it was found in central illinois.

I think its a Spanish Infantry button from the Napoleonic Wars
