I was reading some stuff on another page about cleaning buttons and found it very interesting. And then I remembered I had a flat button I thought nothing of until you wrote those tips. I tried cleaning this one to see if there was any type of info on it, and I'm starting to see something and that is about it . Can you help me find out something about this button? Thanks.

Keep in mind, a size reference is useful when posting here--like a U.S. coin of some sort beside your Find.

Without a backmark, best we could say is 1820-1860.

If that button is large it could be a bit earlier, but my hunch with that type of shank is that the button is about the size of a Nickel, and would fall into the date range given above.

If you are seeing something on that button, jump over to the "Post Deleted" thread and see if you can help us out. ;D

I kind of see what seems like w, and for sure a T, R, D with three football shaped symbols to the right of it.

I'd be willing to bet it reads "WARRANTED" with three circles of a design on either side of it going down the edge of the button.

Try doing a "rub" with a pencil and paper. Sometimes the letters show up better. Another option is to take a photo in natural light and have the light come in from the side. Then play around with it in whatever photo program you have.

Thanks but I've already done that. that is how I found the letters on it. I'll try to get a closer shot of the button if you still can't see it.

Buckles is on the money, I have a medium flatt button and I took me forever to make it out but the word WARRANTED was a tough one. Mine also says TREBLE GILT but no maker's back mark. Also found 2 others, one says "SUPERFINE" and only has a maker mark of "S" and the third is identifiable as JOSEPH MANN'S No. 2 QUALITY (Joseph Mann buttons made in Birmingham England 1800-1843).
