Found this button along a shoreline where trappers and traders frequented. The backmark says "BEST", and it appears that arrows border the rim. Any ideas on the button company? Military?

Any help would be great!

Probably just a civilian flat button that would have been silver/gold plated. The back most likely said something like "BEST QUALITY" and are from the early-mid 1800s.

Other quality designations I've found personally have any combination of: BEST QUALITY SUPER RICH WARRANTED PLATED TREBLE GILT EXTRA RICH ORANGE GOLD COLOUR (etc.) on them and don't always list a makers mark. The fronts are usually plain but some of them have various types of floral decorative designs.

Grasshopper is correct. By the Civil War, this style had become "old" and fancier buttons came into vogue.

Thanks Grasshopper! I thought the "Best" was a name. Like Best Co. etc. but it certainly makes sense!
