Re: Five year's and still no answer!!

How large is it?

How thick it is?

What makes you think it's a "token" ?

Did they make pewter tokens?

It looks like the missing piece might have had a loop for something... watch fob?

It looks like slag... those are my thoughts... :tongue3:

Re: Five year's and still no answer!!

looking at it closely I think I see growth patterns on it like those found on rocks. Certain iron and coal compressed. How do you know it is pewter? And explain the cut horse hair please.

What was the reading on it when you found it and can you disc it out with iron? :icon_study:
Thanks Rob

I really don't see much detail at all. Looks like a piece of slag like Jim said. Can you see more detail than what the pictures show? If so could you give some more information? If not, I don't know what it is or how anyone can ID your item. :'(

The oval pewter token is about three inches long and and inch and half across and five millameter's thick . You can see the cut mark's in the upper right corner. There is a faint bust of man face that is facing to the left dead center of the first pic of the oval token ps this coin was found three inches away from the token!!!

Re: Five year's and still no answer!!

If you can see something on there that doesn't show up due to limitations of lighting and or photography, try a simple "pencil rub". Just lay item on flat surface, lay paper over it and secure paper with tape, then rub gently with pencil to bring up the different contours in the item.

If Dick Tracey can do it, you can too.

I think it's part of a tin ingot. Tin was widely used in the 1800's for all kinds of stuff - cheap and easily malleable. Also used for solder...

Re: Five year's and still no answer!!

probably a piece of slag from the blacksmith shop, it pooled on the ground and took the form of what it landed on, too big and irregular to be a token

I agree, too irregular and too thick for a token, unless there really is a face on it but I cant see it. The horsehair lines are probly cut marks made by someone for some unknown reason.

Changing the image to negative does reveal an outline of head & eyes (if I squint really hard).

Yeah Gypsy, it might be slag.

I was just trying to see if I could see what John was seeing.

Whew! My "seeing" comment could be in a song....
