"Fist Full of War Nickels"

Unbelievable!!! I went to the old park that has "skunked me on silver" for the past six months, plenty of old clad, a buffalo, a war nickel, and a dozen or so wheaties. Today I was hitting some of the same areas that I have hit before with my ACE 250 and new 8.5 DD coil and came across a crazy signal that was just all over the place, it went from iron to silver and every where in between. I passed it up thinking it was trash but came back to it later, GLAD I DID!!! I dug a small plug and believe it or not at the bottom of the plug (about 5") were 3 or 4 nickels, Still getting the weird signal I opened the hole up more and "WOW" War Nickels one after another. What a great day! Out of one hole I found, 1 1939, 2 1940's, 2 1941's, 1 1942, 9 1943's, 3 1944's, and 7 1945's.

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

20 silver nickels in one hole? Amazing find!

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

Grats! Kinda funny that this evening I found a 1940 nickel also, on a local beach. It was sunk at the base of the dunes (recently fallen).

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

Not with a 250 you didn't. Everyone knows a 250 couldn't find a '56 Buick let alone a '41 nickel.

Way to Go.

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

Nice find.

The 1942, 9 1943's, 3 1944's, and 7 1945's are the only nickels containing 35% silver (56% copper, 9% manganese) as a part of the war effort.

Today's silver market value is around $2 each, however may have a higher value depending on grading...

It would be assumed that they were lost in the mid to late 40's, maybe early 50's.

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

Congratulations and welcome to TNET! This was a great, unique recovery. I've never heard of anything like it! Keep digging those weird signals. I dig mostly older sites, and have doubled my catch of "keepers" since I started digging everything above foil.

Re: "Fist Full of War Nickels"

remarkable! i found my first war nickel a couple weeks ago. some of yours are in nice condition. "Banner!!" I say...well, bannerish anyway.
