fishermans spots and Shrimpers Hangups

Re: fisherman's spots and Shrimper's Hangups

signumops, harbor freight sells an underwater camera that comes with a monitor and you can record to plug in recorder(camera,VHS,whatever) comes with 60 to 100 feet of cable not sure which but does excellent job of filming , we used it in NJ to do underwater evidence recovery , and the visibility in NJ is a lot worse than in Florida, and it sells for $100.00.....i was going to get one and use it off the down rigger, or attach it to a remote controlled submarine that a friend of mine has....good luck

Re: fisherman's spots and Shrimper's Hangups

Hey Limo Bob:
Got one of those fishing TV's and we have used it a few times while magging. One of those jobbies with the "Infra Red" eyeball lenses. Works good in sunny water, but, I am going to be dangling around 100 feet sometimes and need propulsion since we will be trying to hold position with a single screw diesel and have to rely on our DGPS trackback navigation screen to stay put. Too much work to keep throwing a 70 pound hook with a trip line. I'm getting too old for that... once, maybe twice a day is a good setup for me, and I'd rather not drop the hook in 100 feet of water on who-knows-what laying below. So, ROV is gonna have to do the job, home-made or otherwise.

I have more than a thousand (I think there are 1830 if I remember correctly) such points gathered by a shrimper. They range from the North Brevard County latitude to the St. Lucie mid-county latitude. These include the CORRECT gps fixes for many of the wrecks off the Bulls and southward to Indiatlantic.

I don't necessarily agree with your assessment of "correct gps fixes". I have 3 sets of these numbers, about 1200+ hang spots off brevard, volusia, and Indian river counties from 40 feet to 600 feet and the GPS numbers that come with them are far from correct. I search these all the time, as I am a fisherman/spearfisherman, and have a good look at the structure that cause these hangs. Let me tell you all something, I feel confident that I can convert loran numbers better than anyone on this forum, and the shrimp trawl hangs are a pain in the rear no matter how many suave GIS tools you throw at it. Why? Because the trawlers drag nets 100's if not near 1000' behind the boat, and you don't know what direction they were headed when dragging (although typically n to south). I have had good success finding these spots, with some search patterns. Takes a while but in the end its sometimes worth it. Finally, a weathered and storm-worn ballast pile doesn't really present much of a hang, in fact I would bet that repeated drags would flatten and scatter a pile. Use caution with the offshore AWOIS numbers, they are highly erroneous.

inleturf,
You have a good point about the drag distances on the nets for shrimpers. But I think there would be less difficulty narrowing the hang when we talk about the Gulf side. A good sidescan should be able to reach out and touch something with a reasonable search when given a set of numbers. Fisherman's rockpiles of course are right on!
Additionally, why don't you get together with Signumops and compare those numbers when you're not doing anything next winter.

Great idea Aquanut. Thats exactly why we had the "Treasure Hunters Cookout." I'm really sorry you could not attend Inletsurf. If you could get together with Signumops and compare numbers maybe you culd narrow down the good stuff. This is a matter of trust and no one on this forum is more trustworthy than Signumops!
