Hope I'm not telling tales out of school here. I've been around this for a very long time, and I do my best to always respect a confidence. When I was more actively selling books (instead of just buying them) often people would tell me about their projects so I could assist them.
Back in the day the California Division of Mines and Geology had a museum and store in San Francisco (now I can't remember if it was in the Ferry Building or the Federal Building on Battery Street). It was really a neat spot! One of the clerks told me these old prospectors would come in and ask for a map. When asked "Of what?" they would respond "If I told you then you'd know where it is!"
You were wise to let them pick...
