Detector(s) used
Garrett Ace 250
I was accross the street from my home. The city has recently bought out a bunch of homes there so I figured I would detect at a home I knew was built in the 50's. I knew the guy that lived in it and he also built this home and three others on this block. Went out yesterday and found a 70's qtr and a few other items. Like yesterday I was using my Ace 250 and using the coin discrimination. Any of nails in the picture were found in a hole with something else the detector pinged on. The two larger pieces of metal were found by detector pings at 8+ inches. Not sure what either of them are. The one is about the thickness of a license plate but no stamped numbers or anything on it. The other looks to be a crushed section of pipe.

The wheat penny was my second find today at about 4 inches. I had to resist rubbing it like I see in many youtube videos. I looked at it closely and could only discern it was a penny from Lincolns head on it. Put it in the pocket and went home after awhile. Pulled the penny out and saw it was a wheat! I was very excited. Washed it in warm water and it is a 1947 penny. I'm happy!

You have a good machine and it will give you lots of good stuff, just take your time it will all come to you. Sound is what you have to learn. It's like (Blskypilot) put it plant you a field to go over, put some coins, bullets, brass. Put it form 1' to 8' deep. And it will give you a good spot to learn the sounds you will be after. And as the dirt gets dry the sounds will change and you will know. I have had my spot out for 8yr. I love to just go over it form time to time. It keeps me up on the sounds that we all hear and it will help. I have silver, clad, flat button, pennys and bullets in my spot. Put out six to eight pieces and you will have a good spot to practice. HH

Wow! I guess I thought he ment just kinda throw them on the ground and go over it. I suppose "planting" them is a great idea since then you would have different soil conditions... thanks for the advice... Although I dont have any silver to plant yet! LOL

One of the places i work has lots of Iron crap metal like what you are finding. I recently saw a photo of that area from 1929. Apparently there was some sort of industrial operation on that spot. I still have a lot of that space to cover. It's produced 1 Rosie and a Silver ring besides to regular clad. Sometimes, I get really irritated digging up that stuff. But heck, gotta take the good with the bad.

Actually mariposagold... There used to be an Icehouse for the region directly behind the home I have been detecting. I'm sure they had a lot of sheds full of straw to keep that ice over the summer, so I'm sure a lot of the nails are from back then. Up river there is a powerplant that is no longer in service and there is nothing but trash around that place! I'll stick to these buy out homes I have an older one I'm going to try and hit up tomorrow if its not raining!

I'm a long way from "learning" my machine, I get phantom tones a lot (which I'm starting to figure out usually happens when I bump the coil as i'm swinging through),:D

I've just recently started using an AT-PRO but have many years experience in waving a magic wand over the ground. One thing I've noticed about this machine might apply to the ACE. Yeah, bumping the head around is never a preferred way to hunt. Unavoidable some times, I know.

I've seen this machine produce a pretty good signal but when I stop and check closer, it's a 35 or further down on the VDI. When the discriminator is set to eliminate these signals it usually shows on the screen but doesn't make a sound. UNLESS... one happens to raise the detector up at just about the same time it passes over the signal. Either by a pendulum swing where the head raises up at the end of each swing, or by bumping a clump of grass or rock or other, causing the head to bounce up. I think the circuitry has a bit of a problem when the signal is just beginning to be detected and the head position is changed.

Smooth out your swing and check the signal a few times before digging. Or check the iron audio to see if it might just be a nail. Otherwise, you dig, getting the little nail culprit, but when you check the hole and dirt, (smoothly), there's no signal because the discrimination is working, eliminating the iron. Make sense?

Hope that helps but the best thing is to just pay attention to what your detector is telling you, it is talking to you all the time. ;)

Good luck and HH!

Congrats on your first Wheat Cent! I still remember the first one I found some 12 years ago :) Hopefully you'll find many more.

I'm hoping! Getting frustrated with the Ace... Looking at getting a better detector. I know I need to know my machine better but there are things I could rant about this detector, but I'll find a better place to do so.

THANKS by the way for all of the positive feedback!
