Good job on your first silver!! It is a good feeling indeed.

Good job! You will never forget that coin. Take a little baking soda and water. Wet the coin under water then roll it in the baking soda until you get a paste like consistency. Then just rub the coin gently between your thumb and index finger using the paste. She'll come out brand new.

Congrats on your first silver! That is always a special one. First, look up the date and mint-mark to make sure it's not a key or semi-key date coin. As long as it's not super valuable, then clean away! The baking soda paste does a great job of polishing silver, but NEVER clean valuable coins.

Sweet, whats the date and mint mark?

I feel your joy pal!!! I just found my first Merc Dime today too!!! I was lucky enough to hold it under some running water and the dirt fell off (found in a place where the dirt washes away easily). But anyway, congrats on the find and happy hunting!!!!!!!!

Can't tell the date or mint mark. I found it near a newer powerline pole & all the tar melted off the pole and saturated the ground. This was about 5 inches deep and it is baked on this coin.

somewhere between 1913-1919 S. Slowly looking better:occasion14:

Congrats on your first silver! I bet you could make out the date and mint mark, do yourself a favour and get a jeweler's loupe. I'd be lost without mine.

Use baking soda and water, mix into a paste rub it over the coin, it will clean up nice...

Congrats, a merc was my 1st also

I found my first Merc last month. Congratulations... GL&HH.

Try using WD-40 to get the tar off. Let it sit in it for awhile to soften up the tar. If that doesn't work, carburetor cleaner might work. As a last resort, gasoline should get the tar off. Any automotive cleaner that removes tar from chrome should work as well.
