Been detecting for about 3-4 months and finally found my first silver coin, 1944 quarter, next to the fireplace of a 100 year old house that had burned down 10yrs. ago.

Made a pact with the owner that I will take her everything I find and she will decide what she wants to keep. Plenty of area left to cover and I hope the fire place will provide some more silver coins. Also found a '61 and '64 penny right next to the quarter. Am getting hits on more metal a little deeper in the same place, but had only 30 mins to search this cool place this am. If more good stuff comes up I'll post.

Congrats on your first silver! I might be tempted to not tell her about that one just in case she likes it, I mean it is your first. Good job :icon_thumleft:

Ha, that thought did cross my mind, but I keep my word. Here is a pic.

Congrats to you. You will always remember your first one. Maybe tell her you just found a quarter. If your lucky she isn't keen on it being silver.

Congrats on your digs!
Best to keep your word, it's more the finding than the finds.
You don't want to lose your site over a quarter !

You'll always remember your first silver coin. I have all of my "firsts" in 2x2 holders in an album. Good for you sticking by your promise and not selling your credibility for 5 bucks worth of silver & shame on those who are for sale so cheap... Times have changed and not for the better. I'm sure if the lady wants it and you explain it is your very first silver coin she'll let you keep it and you'll sleep better knowing you kept your word.

Hi SmittyW......
Saw your post and had to ask.....is you name William Smith? Reason for asking: That's my name.
William Smith, originally from Oregon.....now residing in South Korea. See that you haven't been dirt fishing
for long. I've been at this (addictive) habit for about 35 + years. It gets to you, for sure. Wife doesn't
understand it, but I couldn't quit.....because I don't want to. :) Well, looking forward to seeing you pull some
nice stuff out of the ground.

Thank you all for the support. No, first name is Smith. You ought to see the way some mail is addressed since my last name is Williamson.

Well, I went back this morning to the site and dug for 2hrs. Found junk all over the place and decided to try the hole were the first silver came from.

It was goooood. Found two 1964 quarters and one standing liberty quarter with the date gone.

When finished, I went to where the owner works (lady) as part of my bargain and showed her the 4 quarters and two pennies and explained that the '44 was my first silver find.

She said "Sorry, but they are all old and I am going to keep them." With that she scooped them off the counter and it was over.

It really doesn't matter that much to me because I kept my word to her and showed her what I found of value. If she wants anything else found at that place though, she better get her own shovel as mine is not going to touch that dirt again.

hike, Amen on wife not understanding. Not only did I loose all the stuff I found, but just got yelled at cause I didn't get home earlier to take her shopping this morning. GRRRR. >:(, LOL.

Good luck. Hope some of that silver ends up in your hands.

Congrats on the finds! :icon_thumright: I'm a noob, too (less than a month of detecting since the ground thawed), and haven't found any old silver, yet.

Sorry to hear the owner was not very nice aout it. I've seen a lot of posts here about how to handle "splitting" finds on somebody's property. Some detectorists won't offer the owner anything and the owner doesn't mind, while some some "suggest" a 50/50 split. I haven't gotten the nerve to ask anybody yet, but I think I'd offer a split. It IS their property, but you're doing the hunting on your time with your equipment, so a 50/50 split sounds fair to me. If they wouldn't agree to that, I guess I'd move on. You kept your word though, and probably got a lesson on deal negotiation, too. ;-)

I certainly know the feeling with the wife! Mine is a bit miffed with my new obsession. :-\

You've caught the silver fever now. Nice story and thanks for sharing.

Wow! Great finds! And I'm GLAD you're not digging there again! Shocking to me that the lady was so selfish that she wouldn't even give your first silver quarter to you when there were two other similar ones plus the Standing Liberty! I've been on this planet a long time and greedy behavior like hers makes me sick. I've detected only beaches and parks so far, so haven't encountered owners. I advise you when you pick your next private spot to offer the owner a 50-50 split, so you'll get a fair share! Or if you prefer, a 70-30 split with you getting the 70 percent.
Though I've been detecting only a few months, I'm always amused when guys post about "the wife" not understanding their detecting, because in my case, "the husband" thinks that my adult son and I are both totally bonkers to be digging up old stuff. He comes along sometimes anyhow. And once placed a scattered line of coins along the sidewalk leading to our home for me to find when I returned. As I was exhausted from detecting that day, the scattered coins were a hilarious antidote. Andi

Funny critters, those wives... They think it's perfectly normal to go shopping for hours at a time and not buy anything but our hobby is "weird" lol no offense to the ladies here of course. Mine dosn't have the least bit of interest in going detecting with me but has made it clear that any jewelry I find immediately becomes hers and since seeing some of the awsome rings posted here she is always telling me to go dig some for her.. :laughing9:

Just stop by a coin shop and buy one to replace it. It won't be expensive. Your happy, she is happy and you get to keep your very first silver.

Call me selfish..what i dig ..i keep...or I woundn't dig it up in the first place.

Nice first silver though ..congrats to u :)
